23.5 month old with frequent night wakings x's 4 wks
« on: January 31, 2009, 13:49:51 pm »
We DD has been having these night wakings since about 4 weeks ago now.  She wakes up at random times through the night. Sometimes just 2 times. Other times she'll be up 5 or 6 times.  And it seems all she wants is me to go in her room, say what I say (it's ok, go back to sleep, love u), and back to sleep she goes.
The last week or so it seems to have escalated to more intense crying/yelling.  When I go in to see her, she settles right away but starts up as soon as I leave.
For the most part, she settles and goes to sleep fairly quickly at night. She seems to be tired - rubbing her eyes, yawning and other things she does when tired.
She had a hard time as a baby with her sleep and has slept through the night since around 7 months.  We've had the occassional bump in the road but this is by far the longest time.  It's like she regressed!!

Her routine right now:

Up at 7ish
Nap at 12 till 2 - 2:30
Bedtime at 7-7:30

We've tried without a nap and she can barely last till bed - just really tired and a bit oobnoxious and more whiny/miserable.  And waking her from her nap leaves her grumpy too!

Could it be teeth? Has she got her 2yr old molars?

Maybe it's teeth....she hasn't gotten her 2 yr. molars yet.
I have no idea....can the teeth be bothering her for weeks? Never gone through this before!

My little one is 25 months and her sleep seems to be changing with early wake ups and waking up after she goes to bed.  And similar to your situation, she was a good sleeper for a long time.
I am thinking she is getting her molars and from what I heard it can take months.  But I am a new mom too :)
I haven't given her meds yet..but in the past it worked.  When teething, I have read they get tired more easily.  But who knows???

Hi I'm having the same issue. My little one is 23 months old and used to sleep all night. For the past month she has been getting up at varying times throughout the night; anywhere between 1-4 times. Currently trying Walk In Walk Out but finding it exhausting! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi sabers78,

It could be that she is going through some SA. Here's a link about it babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=80822.0
It is very true that the teething can go on for months, it sure did/does here and SA often comes at times of teething/illness as they feel more vulnerable. Try giving pain meds (preferrably Ibuprofen for nights as it lasts longer, 6-8 hrs)
She will definitely still need a nap for some time yet. Have you tried playing around with the A times a little? Perhaps she can tolerate a longer A in the am and will do better with shorter pm A? It's worth a try as if she's getting OT by bedtime any issues of SA and/or teething will get worse by that.
Let us know how it goes!

Hi there! My son is 26mo and we've been experiencing the same situation for a long time (but - unlike other toddlers mentioned in this topic - my son has always been a poor sleeper). He wakes up many times, usually before midnight, and settles as soon as me or my husband goes into his room. Sometimes he wakes up at 2am or 3am again. I enter his room, say it's night time and that mummy sleeps in the other room and leave. But instead of resettling he calls me once more after a few minutes. When I refuse to go he cries even louder and eventually I have to go to him. I don't think it's the 2y-molars problem, because it's been going on for a long time now. How can I get my son to sleep through the night? I'm very tired now, especially that I'm pregnant with a second baby and need more sleep than before...

I think we went through something like this at about the same age. It seems to pop up every so often! You have some good advice so far... I also wound up using gradual withdrawal during the times I had to go in (and tried to start by shushing/saying it was okay from outside the door first) to his room. Over a period of time (a week? can't recall fully) he got used to putting himself back to sleep. Teeth can definitely play a role, as can any new milestones or new excitement.

Also, watch her really carefully for OT before bedtime and don't be afraid to put her in her crib sooner if she seems cranky, etc. We've noticed OT definitely correlates to more night wakings (especially ones within a few hrs of bedtime).
