Just curious really. I had thought that my DS (nearly 8 months) could handle 3h+ of A time easily, but after a period of disruption we are back to good long naps (yesterday and today we've been having 1.75 and 2h naps) and he's been getting fussy and tired earlier than usual - he's managing less than 3h at the moment ??? What gives? (Is it that thing about sleep begets more sleep? If so I hope it does something for all his NWs :P)

Hello monopod!! Have you thought about Overstimulation?? My LO couldn't handle long periods of A time because of OS.  I used to place him in his swing for all his A times, so he had had enough before it was time for a nap.

I'll be back with a link that talks about it.  Let me find it.

"sleep begets sleep" Definitely!  It's very true of all of my kids...

Thanks Alexa! I don't *think* OS is the issue here as we haven't changed anything about our playtimes recently - the longer naps are the only thing different about our day - but it's good to keep that in mind!

Jocasta - did you find that longer daytime sleep meant better rest at night for your kids?

Hiya - I know your LO is much older than mine, but mine has only started taking long naps over the past 2 or 3 weeks. I've noticed INSTANTLY that he is much more tired than he was when he was taking short naps.  I do think it is a matter of good sleep encouraging good sleep, I also think that before, he was running on adrenaline and very hyper from it!  I think now that he is getting some good naps in he realises a bit more of what he's been missing and he is staying relaxed enough to want to sleep more.

I compare it to the way I suddenly was WAY more tired when he was 10 weeks old and started STTN and when I woke at 7am from an 8 hour sleep, I was way more tired than the nights when I was up 4 or 5 times.  Just that my body had a good chunk of sleep and realised that it needed more!

But, glad I'm not alone in this one as I also thought it was a bit odd.  We are combatting it by keeping his A time at the same as it was, but more low key.  I did try a couple of days to put him down earlier but it only resulted in short naps again, so I ditched it right away!

I have found that for my LO, longer daytime sleep means better nighttime sleep.  He has been STTN since he has longer naps.  But, my LO is younger than yours, so I'm not sure it should be the same for your LO.

I'm sure you'll receive advice from the right person soon.

Good luck,
Alexa

We've had major sleep issues with my youngest since birth and this is been down to the fact that her sleep cues were so abrupt and I often missed them = her getting OT.  We finally cracked this a few months back and almost as soon as her naps sorted out, she started doing eight hour stretches.  She's now (touch wood) doing 12 hrs at night and I didn't think we'd EVER get there lol!

So yes, their night sleep (all three of them actually) has improved with better naps :)

Thanks all! I'll keep my fingers crossed that we will start to get some better nights now, once we've also tackled our nursing at night issues.

mashimaro - good comparison! In fact I think I was just thinking the other day that I didn't remember being this fuzzy-headed since he sttn in September, but hadn't yet drawn the parallels :P
