Has anyone used phenergan? My Dr has prescribed this today as a last resort as we really need a nights sleep. Does it work?

I've taken it for morning sickness during pregnancy (anti-nausea).  I've always been sleepy then, but it was hard to tell what was med & what was pg.  Haven't heard fro a toddler, though.  :-\

Combined with codeine for when she has croup, so that adds to the sleepiness.  good luck!!

Yes it does make them sleepy

Gave it to DS last night (17mo) for allergies, and he usually has a night feed, and a 10 hour night, last night was 11 hours, no night feed.

it makes them sleepy and on days when i know hes unwell i have given it to him to help him sleep better.  please follow the dose the doctor has prescribed.
i dint know it was available abroad! haha. its what my mil used to use for her lo.

My parents used to give it to us on long haul flights. From what I know you need to be careful as too large a dose will make you hyper...

I don't think it is related to the dose - some kids react with sleepiness, others with hyperactivity...

How old is your LO? It's not recommended for under 2s; over that age it is recommended you use with caution. In rare cases it could actually have the opposite effect, and stimulate a child. A possible side effect of this is heart palpitations, or even seizures (very rare though). I looked into using it in desperation myself, but in the end decided to look for alternative solutions as just didn't want to take any risks (though I stress again, from what I have read, the possible side effects are very rare). If the Doctor has prescribed it I'm sure you'll be fine if you follow his/her advice re doseage etc, but an internet search of my own a while back seemed to suggest the general wisdom is to use as little as possible and look for other solutions to the sleep problem (which I am sure you are already doing). Good luck!

My LO was 2 at Christmas. We've tried everything else, hence why the dr gave us this. As I put above I gave him the lowest dose possible as I have been worried about it too. I think its just like the old piriton from years ago when I was a kid, which actually used to knock me out too. We are only planning on using it for 3 nights just tro try to get him a sleeping pattern back.I'm dreading Friday night already!

i found it never helped cure sleep issues, had to work on that seperately. i gave it continuously for 3 days during diwali (when we have lots of fire crackers, loud ones that too burst in the evening into late night) so that he wouldnt get too disturbed.

please use with caution.....and enjoy the nights you get your sleep!

It did help us with teaching independant sleep at one stage - changed what had been a 2+ hr fight with beyond hysterical screaming to get her to sleep into a 40 min one.  Didn't take the problem away, still had to sleep train, but made the training manageable iykwim.

Might be worth noting here, that for us, it was not a permanent solution.  Some kids just need their parents at night, at my DD is now kind of co-sleeping.  she usually falls asleep on her own in our bed, we move her to her own bed she returns int he night - now we have a matress beside our bed, so she usually sleeps there, but is welcome to go to her own bed whenever she wants (and sometimes she does). we are all sleeping much better.

DS still sleeps in his own room - he doesn't need us anywhere near like DD has always needed us.

well it didn't work last night, he was still up at 1am but was really upset. Last night of trying it tonight, if he wakes again, we'll stop it for good.

Most of the antihistimines make you sleepy for several days in a row.  Then your body gets used to the effects.

As mentioned it is recommended to speak to your doctor with any further concerns. Many PP's have given excellent advice and words of caution.  I will now lock this thread and am hoping you are satisfied with the advice and comments. Hope you all get some sleep Mella and things sort themselves out. HUGS. We are always here to discuss any further issues and give advice using  BW techniques.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to PM me.
