How do you get them to drink when they are sick?
« on: January 31, 2009, 22:54:41 pm »
Hi guys.
Need some help getting fluid into my 15mth DD who is sick at present.
Normally drinks really well - 2-3 glasses water (straw cup) and 1-2 glasses milk a day (sippy cup).
Now down to half glass water and maybe 2/3 glass milk.
Sick with broncholitis and just not interested.

Still having small wet nappies luckily.
But I don't want to have to take her back to hospital.
Trying to use a syringe at present, tried a different glass....

HELP.

Is she eating?  They can also get fluids from their food, like soup and fruit and cereal

I'm pushing the custard, yoghurt and wetter stuff like grapes.
Watermelon is a good idea, I'll go get some thanks!

She still eats, but way under what she normally does. Still anything counts!
Thanks though.

DD(17 months) drink swater with her meals and usually takes enough but when she is ill and needs more there are a few little things I do.
It sounds like you may have tried this as you tried a different glass...but I find anything DD see's us drinking out of she wants so when she is sick I sit with her and give her a propper glass or a pint glass and a straw and she loves drinking out of it or a water sports bottles (If she is sick Il empty it and put in cool boiled water for her...if it doesnt have a drinking spout again il give her a straw.)
Alsio normally DD only drinks water but when I need to increase fluids I add a little juice to it and keep it in view so she is more likely to ask for it.
Another way but long winded way is she has a  little tea set and sometimes we play with that and pour a little water into the play cups and then we both drink it.

DD also will take frozen fruit, ice cubes, or Popsicles when sick - you could even make your own juice-sicles.

My daughter loves drinking water out of mineral water bottles so anytime I want her to drink more, i have a bottle with me, dont even offer it, and she's knicked it off me and glugged nearly half the bottle ! it's the novelty i think.
