Help with 6wk old night wakings
« on: February 04, 2009, 22:27:43 pm »
We've been using EASY since our daughter was born. She's now 6wk and still waking on a 3hr schedule throughout the night.
We've been doing 2 cluster feedings and a dream feeding (sometimes she wakes) but she still wakes only 2 hours after the dream feed ends.
Then we continue on a 3hr schedule throughout the night. Any ideas? I know she's still young but I'm hoping to get some feedback on anything we can be doing.

I know a big part of night wakings are what happens during the day so here's a recap. She typically wakes around 6:30. Eats for 1/2 hour always after sleep. During day is able to be up for 1/2 hour to 45min including a diaper change. Her naps during the day are between 1-2.5 hours. In most cases if she sleeps for 2 hr I will wake to feed so that she eats every 3hr.  She is breastfed and eats on average 10-15min per side.

In the evening we try to get the cluster feeds as close to 6 and 8 as possible and then the dream feed at 10:30 or 11. Since she wakes 2 hours after going down sometimes she wakes prior or during the dream feed (bottle 3-4oz). Then we continue like clockwork with her waking every 2 hours after going down throughout the night. She appears to be eating the same amount (20-30min) at every night feeding.

I exclusively breast feed during the day and night except the dream feed my husband does with a bottle of pumped milk. So that is the only feed we're sure she gets between 3-4oz. The middle of night feeds she is awake and appears to take a whole feed which is her average 10 min on each side. She has had gas problems but we typically see her fussy around early evening. During the night she seems to be clearly waking for hunger and then right back to sleep. But it seems odd to me the cluster feeds and dream feed aren't getting her further than her standard 2 hours of sleep after going down.

Hi and welcome!  Reading this, I just wanted to mention that most babies have a huge growth spurt at around 6 weeks old....so if she's waking that often overnight, it could be due to this (10 min per side is a nice amount of time for most babies!).  Your routine looks wonderful - sounds like you're doing a great job keeping her on track.  Aim for full feeds during the day, and I'd suggest give it another few days of this and see if things start to settle down.  After a couple more days, if it IS the growth spurt, things should start to lengthen out overnight.  I take it that she's having at least 6 wet and dirty diapers a day and is gaining weight well?

Her day time routine looks great, so I don't think that's what is effecting her.  Maybe just to be sure can you post the routine in this format?
