5mo with intake dropping off
« on: February 20, 2009, 13:02:52 pm »
Alex has always been a fussy fidgety eater and now he's at that nosey stage it's become a nightmare. Up until a couple weeks ago he was on 4 9oz bottles a day- 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm- and he would finish most of them.

For the last week or so he'll have about 4oz and then getting any more down him is almost impossible. This morning after an hour and 20 mins I gave up- he'd had 5oz. He squirms and fidgets to get away from the bottle and he is so strong it's like a battle.

He's been on the fast flow teats since 8weeks old as he's on special formula which is really thick. I have poked an extra hole to see if the flow was too slow, but nope, he still doesn't want it.
He is 22 weeks and weighs 18lb, he is a big fella. I just can't see how an average of about 26oz formula (on a good day) is sustaining him. MIL keeps banging on about weaning him but if he's not hungry then surely that's not going to help, it'll make him drink less milk, not more?!

any thoughts?

Could he be teething?

If you think that he might.  Try rubbing a bit of teething gel on his gums and see if that helps ease the discomfort.

don't think so. I had a look and he happily let me poke his gums, in fact he giggled at me, not sure he would have done that if they were sore.  ::)
I have tried poking an extra hole in the teat, tried the variflows, and tried sitting him on a nursing pillow instead of me. Nothing helps, he just cries at the bottle.
The only thing that might be relevant is that he had his jabs on Tues and has been worse than usual at feeding since then. Could after- effects last this long?
help me Paula, you're my only hope!  ;)

Hugs hun  :-*

It could be the jabs making him out of sorts, it does affect all lo's differently.

I am still thinking perhaps teething though  :-\ The teeth may not be ready to cut through, but just moving around in the gums.  They say that it can be quite uncomfortable for them when they are moving up.

Don't rule teething out.  Perhaps try a bit of teething gel about 10-15 mins before a feed and see if that makes any difference.

Also have you tried feeding in front of the television?  Perhaps put a programme on that will catch his eye and he may not concentrate as much on the bottle.

I also think it could be teething, so try something for the pain!

Another thing I thought of was feeding in a dark, quiet place...Around 5 months I would actually (at times) place a small cloth OVER DD's eyes while I fed her because she was so nosy looking all around, not drinking.  It worked!  Thankfully the nosiness passed in a few days.

He's not too bad, doc says a nasty viral infection. He actually had 6oz this morning from one bottle so that's a major improvement.

Croup - poor DD, it is so hard listening to them barking like that. :-*
