International Travel... Tips please
« on: March 02, 2009, 16:53:02 pm »
I'm taking my eight week lo to the states from Europe by myself.  I'm a little nervous about the plane ride and adjusting EASY to the time zone we'll be in.  I will be leaving at 10:30 to go to the US and there is a six hour time difference.  My lo is touchy/textbook (I think), he tends to be fairly fussy. I ready what Tracy wrote about travel, but I couldn't get a late flight out of Europe, only an early one.  I'm also a little nervous as my lo tends to take short naps. Should I wake him to eat during the flight? Should I try to correspond wake times to the appropriate times at my destination?  Or should I throw the routine out the window for that day and just go with the flow?  We've worked really hard to have a routine and I'm a little afraid that I'll ruin it all traveling. Any travel tips would be wonderful!
Thanks!
Stephanie

I think you just need to go with the flow for the day of travel and do whatever keeps your LO happy.  I'd still feed as on schedule as possible but you'll just have to see how you go with the rest of you schedule.  Obviously follow his cues and try to get him to sleep if you know he is tired.  I think the flight may be hard enough without stressing about A times etc.  Just get through the flight then adjust your routine accordingly when you get there.

Have you requested the bulk head in the plane on your flight over?  From memory when travelling with my aunt with her wee one from ireland to new york we were able to get the bulk head and meant they gave us a basinette type thing for the baby to lie in so we didn't have to hold him all the during the flight.

Hope it goes well x

yup, DS and I are sesoned travellers and its so mcuh easie rhwen they are taht tiny. Use a pacifier/feed/nurse the Lo when landing or taking off to ease the pressure on the ears. We forget schedules and let sleeping lions lie when it comes to sleep on flights and the adjust/reset routine once we are in new place.

let me knwo fi you need any specific answers. Make sure you have enough diapers, clothes for baby and even a spare shirt for yourself, because sometimes if a baby spits up or your clothes get messed its nic eto be able to change into a fresh t-shirt and feel neat again. Try and keep hand baggage to absolute minimum and only baby stuff, Take enough bottles. formula if you are formula feeding etc. Loads of wet wipes and just generally enjoy its so mcuh easier when they cant run about :D
9 and 6, oh boy!

There are some good posts around on this but I don't know how to link them.

I think they might be in the 'getting back on track' forum.

I'm taking my lo to South Africa in May - going to be a bit of an adventure for us all  :P DS will be 8 mths then

My ds is a well seasoned traveller too, i'd recommend
feed on schedule (as much as possible), but if asleep don't wake
try and get them to sleep as much as possible...
don't worry about ap!
Feed them on take off and landing too.

Ethan would get really tired and cry lots once we got there due to ot... we let him sleep loads the first day and started our usual schedule the second day.

You'll be exhauted too so drink loads of water and nap when the baby naps.
I'd recommend taking a baby carrier and a rucksack with baby bits. as well as a pushchair.  We travelled Ba and they take your pushchair off you at the gate and you don't get it back until your luggage comes out!  Hence a baby carrier is useful.  Some babies go through lots of nappies as the air pressure affects their stomachs... e was ok but take enough just in case.  Try to travel as light as possible.
Book a bassinet for the baby and take a blanket as the plane may get a bit chilly

Hope you have a lovely trip, like others have said just roll with it - 6hrs isn't too long, it should go quite quick x
