feeding problems
« on: March 09, 2009, 22:33:24 pm »
I am currently trying to put my 5 month old daughter on the E.A.S.Y plan and am having problems getting to have a full feeding. She only seems to be eating off of one side for 10 mins then I burp her and she wont eat on the other side. could she be getting enough from one side or is it the change that I am doing throwing her off???the real problem is an hour later she wants to nurse again so she ends up going onto eating every 2 hours again when I know she should be going 4.

She could easily be getting enough from just one side.  How long was she going between feeds before you tried EASY?  Did you do a gradual transition?  How is she napping?  Any chance she's just using the nursing session to wind down for a nap?

My DD has been on EASY for 1+ months now and it has been a wonderful change. I too had big worries that she wasn't getting enough from me by bf'ing as she most often would nurse for about 7mins and then be done and not even drain the first side. You can be assured though that if you were to pump and then give her EBM and she took only 2 oz, that if she had actually nursed from you she would have taken more like 3 oz. Basically this means that babies are way more efficient at breastfeeding than any pump could every be. So chances are that she is getting enough from you in 10mins. I would suspect that she is wanting to nurse every 2 hours because that is what she's been used to and, let's face it, we would all probably eat every 2 hrs if we had a nice, cosy warm place to hang and our tummies were used to that habit! I would really try holding her off for as long as you can and work up to 4 hours. Do you use a pacifier?

She is not naping well at all. I have been having a really hard time getting her to take a nap at all. Today she napped this morning for an hour and then this afternoon she napped for 30 mins and then i spent the rest of her nap time trying to get her to go to sleep using pu/pd method and it did not work so I fed her for maybe 10 mins and let her play for an hour and now I just put her in her crib again and she is crying on and off trying to go to sleep except now she is soooooo over tired I can't even calm her down. i just don't know what to do anymore.she doesnt know how to suck her thumb(she does try) and she doesn't know how to suck on a pacifier either. I just went a looked at her and she is doing in her crib what she does if I am to go in there and use the pu/pd method so i don't know if i should just leave her or not ....I am very frustrated with this whole thing.

I think you ought to put a post in the nap forum for some ideas from some ladies who are more knowledgeable when it comes to naps :) http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=30.0  I'm sure people over there will be able to help.

As far as the 10 minute single side feeds go, this can be completely normal.  I've only just started offering both sides at the one year mark!  Mae's always been a super efficient feeder (five minute feeds from birth) but Ive recently found out I'm pregnant and am worried about a supply dip.  So yes, a ten minute feed on one side can certainly be enough :-*  Hugs honey - confusing this parenting lark eh? ;)

Hi

Just wondering.... has her feeding always been like this? Quick and often? And previously, how were naps? If both seemed a little more calm before I'm wondering if this is a growth spurt early or something... When did you start implementing EASY?

Her feedings were long and often when she was first born and then she would eat both sides for 8 mins each and for the last month I have had a hard time getting her to eat on both sides. Maybe she is just a really efficient eater now.she never use to have naps at all maybe 4 times a day like 10-15 mins each. I started the E.A.S.Y last thursday. Today has been a lot better. She has been napping for 2 hours now. It has been a really nice and quiet afternoon! I am hoping that this is the start of what she will be like. I also got her to feed on both sides today. So crossing my fingers that she keeps it up!
