Sudden supply issues in one breast????? 8 months in????
« on: March 13, 2009, 16:47:45 pm »
Hi there
Hoping someone can help.  I noticed yesterday that my left breast isn't filling up with milk like my right one is.  My DD has now bitten me twice when she's on the left side, presumably because she is getting no milk, but never bites me on the right.  We've been breastfeeding for 8 months with no problems, oversupply if anything.  What can I do to even it out?
I've been putting her to that low-supply breast for every feed, hoping to encourage more milk production there... cringing the whole time fearing the wrath of her 2 sharp teeth!  Any other suggestions?

The only thing that leaps out is this:
cringing the whole time fearing the wrath of her 2 sharp teeth!
Being tense like that doesn't help.  (I do know from experience how hard it is to relax after a biting episode, though!)

Could you pump a bit on the left to get started & the latch her on after letdown has happened?  Maybe that would help with any impatience.  Really, asking her to nurse that side is the best thing you can do.  I'll see if I can think of something else, too.

P.S.  Had to LOL at your avatar & the caption!  ;D

I so want to help but not really sure how.  :(  :-[

Luckily Candice has the know-how!!! Only thing I can think of is may-be trying to pump the left at night a little, when she's asleep - unless you're feeding at night in which case just please ignore me, I'll shut up....

Hope things improve and I'm really sorry I'm a chocolate fireguard on this one. Love the pic.

You might want to try different nursing positions too.  Sometimes what's comfortable on one side isn't so great for the other. Unfortunately for some women this never really resolves - however, it IS possible to continue to nursing with just one breast too. :)

I'm feeling so lopsided too... one side is way bigger than the other! haha
I will try feeding her on that breast as much as possible and pumping extra to stimulate milk production. Thanks for the tips ladies!

Meant to say I was lopsided, too.  And with J, it was the small one that made MORE milk!  ::)  Good luck!

I have the same problem but on my right side. He has bitten me a few times but then laughs about it. I then have to put him on the left side and he take a full feed from that one. It seems like my right side is not producing and he is only 3 months! I will try the same suggestions...

Hi all,
Just wanted to update that we've fixed the problem... I offered the "less full" breast first every time and now it's back to normal.  DD still doens't feed on both sides normally, so we're back to offering one side for one feeding and the other side for the other feeding.  I'm glad this worked out!  Thanks for all your ideas and help!

Glad things are back to normal.  ;D  Just wanted to add that the same thing was happening with us (8.5 mo) and it ended up being a plugged duct on the one side that easily resolved itself with a little massage.   :)
