Should I be worried?
« on: March 22, 2009, 08:31:34 am »
Hi Everyone!
My DS is 13 weeks tmrw and on aptamil formula since he was 7 weeks old. Has 5-6 ozs at each bottle and We burp one or twice during. He seems to bring up lots of milk after feeds and this is worrying me. He was always a bit sicky and maybe it just seems more now because hes eating more? He is very happy and when he is sick he is not distressed at all. Putting on weight really well - approx 15 pounds now. We sit him on our laps to burp him and this is when the milk comes back. Sometimes its a small amount but sometimes it seems loads! He is on 3.5/4 hr EASY most of the time and is fine at his dream feed when hes not burped. Sleeps well - text book most of the time!!
The upsetting thing is he seems to be sick a lot more when I feed and burp him!! ::) When DH does it he doesn't seem to do it as much!! I can't see that I am doing anything different just that i find it a bit harder to handle and hold him as he is so heavy and I have tendonitis in my wrist! We give him a small amount of Infacol before the feed and a small amount of gripewater halfway through as he was having trouble getting his burps up. Stopped the gripewater yesterday and his wind seemed to bother him more - that could have been my imagination tho! ;)
Any thoughts please?

Is he on the Aptamil Easy Digest?

If he is happy, sleeping well and putting weight on I wouldn't worry about it. Does he throw up when you burp him on your shoulder? Maybe if his stomach isn't quite so scrunched up when you burp him he won't be as sick?

Alex is 6mo and has been on the Aptamil Easy Digest since he was 2 weeks old as he was sooo sick all the time, he used to yack up whole feeds when he burped, our carpets are ruined  ::)
He does have slight reflux and the special formula has  meant he doesn't need medication, it is under control.
He has gradually grown out of it as he has gotten older and in fact yesterday he threw up a couple of ounces when he burped and I realised it's been ages since he's done that.

Sounds like your lo is a happy spitter.  If he is happy about spitting up and does not seem to be in any discomfort then I would not worry too much about it.

My DD was a silent refluxer and was in pain when she was refluxing.  However, we found that the Infacol made my DD bring up her milk.

I would probably keep up with the Gripe water and perhaps give the infacol a break to see if this makes any difference.

I agree with Kathryn, I would also try burping on your shoulder and see if this makes any difference.

Keep us posted on how you get on.

Thank you! Just looked at the stuff on reflux and he doesn't do ANY of those things so don't think he has it. We just decided today to stop the gripewater as sometimes he brings back a clear fluid and wondered if it was that but now wondering whether to stop the Infacol instead after what you just told me!?! My Mum is absolutely convinced that its the gripe water thats making him sick and that it doesn't agree with him and my mother-in-law fed DS yesterday and forgot to give the gripewater and he only brought a small amount of milk back - coincidence? Hmm...need to decide which to stop. Think we will begin by stopping the gripewater and see what happens then look at the Infacol. Thanks for your help,

Hi! Last night went better. I didn't give the gripewater just infacol and burped on shoulder. He wasn't sick at all though I was worried as he didn't seem to burp much at all compared to when he has the gripewater. He went down fine and slept til 7.45am!! This morning did same and he WAS sick a bit but not too much so will carry on with experiment!
Thanks again for advice,

Don't forget also he will probably burp less as he gets older as he will be better at feeding so will take on less air to begin with.

Thanks! Things have changed again. DS didn't have a good morning - seemed agitated and didn't nap for very long at all for first 2 naps of day. Woke from second in distress and couldn' t calm him. In the end gave him some gripewater then he burped, trumped then fell asleep!! Sooo have stopped the Infacol and begun the gw again. Since then he has only brought up a small amount of milk and napped well and been very settled and happy. Fingers crossed we are on the right track now!

Fingers crossed, please keep us posted on how things go.

I agree with Kathryn though, as they get older they become more proficient feeders and will take in a lot less air.
