Put baby to sleep during out ?
« on: April 04, 2009, 02:58:46 am »
Hi, Im just implementing a shush pat method these past 2 days with my 4.5 mo baby boy. Previously he associated BF with sleep, therefore everytime we go out during his sleepy hours, he always get fuss in his carseat / stroller which at the end makes me stop my car or find a place in the middle of shopping mall to feed him until he fall asleep. As Im on my attempt to successing the independent sleep goal, while at the same time I need to go out, what is the best way to put him to sleep in his car seat & stroller ? Do I just have to let him cry until he fall asleep ?

Can you be home for all if not most of his naps?  Consistency is very important if you want Ethan to learn how to fall asleep on his own quicker.  If you must go out then I don't think it would be a good idea to let him cry until he sleeps.

will he use a pacifier to soothe rather than nurse?

will he take breastmilk in a bottle?

not sure if either of those will help.

and even once they can fall asleep independently, they don't always do so while out. my dd until very recently would NOT fall asleep at any one else's house without a HUGE struggle and would wake often and be OT b/c of a terrible nap or night sleep. She slept much better at home in her crib. Her becoming attached to her lovey helped a bit and now she is a little bit better at sleeping other places, but we still try to stick to home for naps and bedtimes if we can.

Good luck though, I know there are times when you just have to go out....so I hope you can find a temporary solution.
