Anybody else use 2% milk?
« on: April 17, 2009, 03:46:15 am »
At my DD's 9 month check up the doctor gave the green light for milk. However, he said to use 2% instead of whole. At her 12 month I will reconfirm this, but I was just wondering if anyone else was told to use 2% vs whole milk?

That depends on her weight, really. If she is very chubby, you can use the 2%. If she is not, I would use whole milk  :-\

Thanks. She's definitely not chubby, in fact her weight gain is pretty slow right now. She's about 29.5 inches long and weighs about 22 pounds. Everything I've been reading says to use whole milk until the age of 2. I will double check with her doctor at her 12 month appointment and then perhaps just use whole milk anyway.  :P

I would agree with the whole milk, really. I don't know where he got his advice from. They really need the fat at that age.

I would use the whole milk too, it used to be recommend to use full fat up to the age of 5 but they've changed it to 2 recently. But there's no evidence that using low fat milk at a young age prevents heart disease- - how could it, I am over 40 and when i was a kid we drank full fat milk! And there were hardly any overweight kids either. So where's the cohort who are at heart attack age who drank low fat milk as kids? It's all just one big experiment  - on our babies!

Sorry for the rant, it just really annoys me when medics tell you do to stuff without any proper evidence for it.

I've never heard of starting with 2% rather than whole. I'd ask the doctor why.

They need the fat from whole milk for brain and nerve development, it's very important.

I totally agree. You should only change to 2% once they are around 5yrs old...and that is only if your child is over-weight......

Wow...that does seem odd.  I'd definitley ask him what he's talking about!  Here is US, they want babes on whole from 12 months to 2 years old....at 2nd b'day they say to go to 2% or some say 1%.    The whole milk is critical for brain development, as all brain connections need fat to fully form.

Thanks everyone. I will ask him why he suggests 2% at her 12 month check up. I'm going to start with whole though. She's not overweight and I want her to be getting everything she needs. I thought it was odd too when he said 2%.
