He's probably just getting used to the continuous flow from the bottle rather than the intermittent flow from the breast - and is getting better at it  :).

I posted another topic.  My little guy only takes about 4 oz and then spits it all out.  Any idea what the problem is, he can't be full on so little?

If you have no concerns over reflux from when you were Bfing it may be due to him getting very windy. Babies gets much more wind on the bottle than the boob especially when they are only learning.

I have burped him in the middle and I thought of that too but since I was worried it would affect his naps, fed him a bit before his nap and he just bites the nipple and laughes.  Then he sucks and lets it dribble out and babbles.  Yesterday, he had 5 oz and when he woke later, he was really hungry way before he was due to eat.

Sounds like he is just being a bit of a monkey. I would allow a few days for him to get used to his new feeding regime - I would not bother with prenap top ups and just deal with short naps if you have to. I think it would only happen once anyway - but if you keep giving it little and often he will snack and mess about.

Its that old thing of only trying to change on thing at a time for them - and just having to accept a bit of trouble in other areas along the way.

It does sound like he is just not interested in the feed, but hasn't realised that the milk will just keep coming unless he spits the whole teat out.

He just needs a bit of time. I'm trying to remember back but I think it took Jacob a good 5 days or so to get completely comfortable with the bottle. It is even harder for them if you are still BFing as well as they have to 'remember' how to do 2 different types of feeding. They do get the hang of it though, so don't worry.

J often takes a very small bottle feed - but it is not often he busts a nap because of it. Sometimes they do 'know' what they need, and it can be very hard not to expect them to take the same amount every time. But of course they won't, just like we wouldn't.

I bet J has done worse today FWIW - 1oz, 1.5oz, 1oz and 3oz  ::) ::). Silly refluxy baby!!

Oh, and teething pains can be worse with a bottle as well as the teat rubs a bit more.

I was just thinking, LizJ, since you BF also you might be the best to answer.  I can really pump alot from my breasts, and do, when he has a bottle, as opposed to just pumping to relieve the engorgement (do you get what I mean?).  Afterwards, my breast is pretty engorged but not so when he BF.  Do you think really I am over estimating what he can take in since when he eats, I'm not so engorged.  Maybe I'm just really MORE effecient then him at getting my milk out as opposed to most babies who are more effecient then the pump.  If you think about it, because I had so much milk, he might really have a bad latch or a latch that doesn't let it all out, hense my need for domperidone to stimulate milk....ok I'm rambling but YOU might be right and he might know what he can take AND he is learning the nipple thing too!

I don't know really - but when I was pumping I used to be able to express about 8oz for a bottle feed, and he would only take 4-6oz. I think some women are just REALLY good at expressing milk  :). I also used to feel very engorged when I was doing a lot of pumping but I think it is quite easy to overstimulate your supply trying to express, especially when you are feeding at the same time. When I went to full time bottle feeding at 7mths it took me 6 weeks to stop pumping as I was so hyperstimulated. I had a freezer full of mik - then discovered I had that lipase issue so it was all soured and Jacob wouldn't drink it.

I think what is happening is just early day issues and he will sort himself out. He probably is playing with the 'silly plastic thing' a bit, and probably still views you as his proper food. He might just be taking enough to tide himself over to the real thing. That will change with time as he settles into his new feeding regime. It really is not uncommon for BF babes to take a huge feed in the am and pm when Mum is there, and then just bits and peices through the day. A friend's baby stopped his bottle completely at 8mths (having had them since 6 weeks) and just decided he would not have milk at all during the days he was at nursery.
