SWADDLING
« on: April 30, 2009, 19:00:14 pm »
I have a 4 week old who I think needs swaddling as she wakes herself up with her arm jolts.  I have bought a swaddling blanket from Mothercare but am wondering if its too late to start?  (she has a baby sleeping bag at the moment).  Also how long can you continue swaddling?  And what do you dress them in underneath?  It is a thin cotton jersey blanket i have bought

 Hi there,

I don't think its too late to start swaddling, DS was swaddled in the hospital and then we stopped and I started again at 3 weeks. Swaddling is ace, it really helped us with sleep issues in the beginning and is a great sleep cue too.  ;D

We used a miracle blanket that is just thin material. He would have a sleepsuit on underneath but that was the middle of winter.

no, not too late to start at all. And you can continue to swaddle until they're breaking out of it, or starting to roll in it. At this time of year I think I had him in just a normal cotton babygrow underneath, and could add a light cotton blanket over top if it was a chilly night.

Swaddle away, I didn't start swaddling until my dd was 7 weeks old and I promise myself that my next one will be swaddled from the time it is born, lol.

I started swaddling at 4 weeks and it was like a magic wand.  I put my LO in a sleeping bag then use a flat cot sheet from Mothercare as the swaddle - very light so LO does not overheat and plently big enought to get good tucking in to keep it nice and secure.  At 10 weeks I left one arm out as he found his thumb.   I will continue to swaddle for a good few weeks and will wean him off it.

Agree with pp LO will be far more settled and it will be a massive sleep prompt when she is nice a snug.

Not to late to start.  I had the most sucess with the Miracle Blanket.  My los could break out of all the other blankets.  I kept DD2 swaddled a little past four months. When she got too big for the Miracle Blanket I used it to swaddle her arms and left her legs and feet out.  That helped us transition out of the swaddle too.
