my ds was sleeping between 11-11.5max most days and the occasional 10.5 in 24 hrs.  now it seems like his sleep is only around 10.5hrs regularly now, if i get more i feel very lucky!!!! how many others out there seem to have 2.5yr olds that need less sleep out there???  He always has been on the low end for sleep since he was born and no matter what i do i have never been sucessful in getting more out of him.  I have to time it out all perfectly or i get a awake time before 6am!  He is unable to go without a nap yet and will sleep anywhere from 45 min to 3 hrs! Today he slept 2 hrs so bed time will be 9pm, hopfully not waking before 6am???  any other stories similar to this you would like to share?

Bumping up for you- I've got a child with lower sleep needs, but not that low...how is his mood with that amount of sleep?
Would shortening the nap help at all?

My DS 26.5 months has always had much lower than average sleep needs. About 45-60 mins less since birth much to my chagrin. He now gets 12-12.5 in 24. I found that at one point he seemed to need less sleep so I increased his A time. This made matters worse and I was at a loss until I read here that this happens a lot and in fact they need just as much sleep just distributed differently. I increased my DS evening A time due to chatting and singing and carrying on at bedtime only to get crying NWs and EWs instead. When I decreased his evening A time it all worked out. FWIW here is our routine:
6-7 wake (average 6:30am)
12:30-2:30 nap
8pm bedtime
So generally 6 hours A in the AM and 5-5.5 in the PM. I find even if his night/nap is longer he still needs the same bedtime and if I assume later due to more sleep it often backfires on me. HTH!

speechie :  no i find shortening his nap makes it worse!!!! I find he's in a better mood, sleeps better , etc when he's had atleast a 2 hr nap, any shorter and he's moody and wakes earlier in the am even if i compinsate for the lost sleep in bedtime... never has worked.

jcsmom: i know what you mean, sometimes i have done just so, increased his A time / bedtime due to a long nap and it has backfired on me and other times it backfires on me keeping it the same... i never know what to do.  he seems to go though phases and sometimes needing more and others needing less adn i never know what his CURRENT need is!!!!  i hate when i think i've made a wright choice nad then he's up at 4:50 am!   i am totally happy with a 6:30 wake up time, anything before is just too early and if it's later he doesn't go down for a nap at a decient time at daycare adn then that messes things up big time!  so i'm at a loss all the time on what to do.
your schedule sounds just like mine for the most part except nap, at home he will nap 2-3 hrs but at daycare i'm lucky if i get a 1.5 hr nap. I don't remember the last time i get past a 6:30 wake up time.....  ahh the decisions on what to do...  nothing seems to work or make it longer/better....
