climbing out!

Hey guys! Not often I have to ask for help with sleep as I really am so lucky with my 2. Last few days Abbi has started the dreaded cot climbing out fun! She is 2 years 3 months, jack was over 3 when transitioned so was very cooperative with a big boys bed bless him! No problems at all. So naptime today, I walk up the stairs to check her after 20 mins and she was laying by her bedroom stair gate with her blanket over her, looking very very sleepy. I nearly jumped out of my skin as wondered what it was lol!!! Very cute to see by the way!  So I decide ok, ill put her in the toddler bed as in their room is her cot, jacks big single bed and also jacks old toddler bed. She lays down and then 2 mins later at gate again, so I lay her down and repeat 5 times, give up and stick her back in her cot. She's now kind of whining and stuff, as she's ot. I'm just a bit flummoxed as to what to do, she sleeps well in her cot once she is replaced and seems to like the idea of laying in the toddler bed but then comes and lays by the gate! I am concerned of course, that she will hurt herself, also that her sleep will mess up so bad in a toddler bed. Such a quandry as to what to do really.... I just think she is too young for this to be a smooth transition, she is touchy and very cuddly and affectionate, so don't want to upset her more than is strictly necessary. I'm pregnant so the 2 hours she sleeps is bliss as ds usually watches a DVD, but today its been spent with me running up and down stairs. Any advice from you who have been there with this at this age? X thank you lots! X

i guess you need to decide if you are going to keep her in the cot, stay consistent if you want to continue with the nap, this is the age heaps fight the nap, i just kept putting dd1 back in, i repeated and repeated and repeated, never had this problem with dd2

Hi ya- we also had similar issues but not climbing - DD bounced and bounced and propelled herself up and over the cot rail - we heard a massive bump and found her lying on her back like a star fish on the floor- she did it twice so we immediately went out and bought a toddler bed - she was just under 2 :-(.  I guess for us she was ready and we made a massive fuss of the new bed and we did have a fair amount of time her not wanting to go to sleep but we stayed consistent and kept her in her sleeping back to avoid too much temptation to walk around.  She soon lost interest in getting out.

Good luck you have to love these development stages :-)

hi Emma...

Oscar wa 3 mths when he BROKE the cot my Emma now sleep is (again, he jumped and jumped and loved landing on his bum in the middle of the mattress.....he's a big lad was about 15 kgs at this stage so broke all the lats under the mattress).

We decided (as I was just pg for his b'day....) that for his b'day we'd do up his room, change all the fuirniture....and we did, bought the toddler bed, made the big deal of it all etc....

but to no avail. He'd also fall asleep at the gate with his blankie, naps were not as big a prob as nights (would take from 7 to 9pm to get my once-brill sleeper to sleep) and EWs when he'd just get out of the bed at 5am.

So, with the main cot broken and awaiting repair, my bump developing and patience dwindling and DH working long hours and being useless at 5am, I brought the Ikea cot we have in ILs here...and he slept in that till around Oct when he was 2.5. I was on mid term break and feeling adventurous and we ttied the BBB transition again.....moved the cot back to ILs, waved it goodbye....but STILL, same issues....

so from Nov to Feb this year, he was in his travel cot (he has a tiny room so it was nice to fold away the travel cot for playtime....). the main cot was fixed, Emma arrived and I thought this monstrosity of a 2 yr 9mth old would be sleeping in his travel cot forever...but he just decided enough is enough....wanted to do his poo on the potty in the mornings....we had a major discussion about it all and we're back to 7-7 sleep more or less and no more poo in night pull up and BBB for good!

so, the morale of my very long winded story is go with her flow. I thought the WORST time for Oscar for any changes would be when Emma was newborn but he was just developmentally ready for both BBB and pooing on potty (has been trained for wees by day and naps since 26 mths) just as she arrived.....

big hugs

I remember the BBB transition parts 1 and 2 here in this house as not a very nice chapter, prob in part due to pg, tiredness etc...
