how much should my 8wk old nap?
« on: May 19, 2009, 10:29:42 am »
My baby is 8 weeks and I'm finding it difficult to tell at what point to put her down for a nap after eating. I try to follow the 3 yawn rule but sometimes she yawns right after eating and other times she won't yawn but starts pulling at her face and fussing and arm flailing. How long should she be awake after feeds at this age? And how do I know if she wants to play or sleep?! Sometimes she seems alert but could be over tired? At night she wakes up around 3-4am for a feed and usually takes about an hour to settle again. Could she be sleeping too much in the day?

According to the 'books' she should have about 4 1/2 hours of sleep a day between 7am and 7pm. My LO has about this but not in the usual 1 1/2 hour naps. More like 2 hours in the morning, then the other 2 1/2 are over the next 2 naps and a catnap. You should aim for about 1hr 10 mins A time from the time she wakes to be put down, but i find that for her first nap, she is up no longer than 45 mins, but in the afternoon she has more like 2 hours A time, so it varies with the bub (obviously)

My LO also wakes between 3 -4 for a feed, but i think this is normal at this age. Well actually i think we are doing well only having one NW.

As for settling, i am not sure, but maybe you could post your routine and one of the lovely experts will have a look for you.

I would try to put her down at her first yawn, or at 1hr15mins after she last woke up, whichever happens first. You're probably looking at something like 5.5-6 hours daytime sleep - 3 naps of 1.5-2 hours, plus a catnap. At this age, there's really not that much danger of them getting too much sleep!
