Am I doing this right?
« on: June 20, 2009, 06:32:47 am »
My son is 6 1/2 moths old and we are slowly on our way to 2 naps. I'm also trying to fit in lunch somewhere :)

Our day yesterday went like this

5.45wake and E (BF)
6.30 solids
S 8.00-9.30
E 10
Solids 11
S 12-1.30
E 2.30
Then I had to do some APOP to get him to have a CN so..
E/S 4-4.30
Soilds 5
Bed 6.30

He then woke up at 5 for the day (his normal wakeup is somewhere between 5-6 and betime between 6-7)

Am I doing this right. One day last week he woke up at 2.30 from his second nap. I know now I should have put him to bed early but I didn't and he got OT and was up all night  ::)

Am I doing right? Do I just need to keep extending his A times a bit until he is up to 3 hours? Sometimes he won't go down for a nap after 2.5 hours anyway and wants to stay up for 3 hours so our days keep going a bit wonky.

We are also having a lot of issues with his first nap being 45mins most of the time too and I just can't change it so it's really hard to get him to 2 naps

sounds like he is giving you some cues to increase his A time if he isnt wanting to go to sleep after the usual 2.5hrs. try increasing by an extra 10/15mins at first for a few days and see how that goes (dont add too much too soon or you will end up with an OT baby). you could also try W2S to try and extend that first nap.

also, are you happy with that wake up and bedtime?

Yeah, he's a 11 hour a night baby and I want him to be getting up around 5.30-6 (it's the time I have to be up to go to work)

He is starting to sleep less at night so I know he's ready for less daytime sleep. He had 2 longer naps yesterday but then there was 5 hours until bedtime so I fed him to sleep for a 15min evening/afternoon nap. This was fine and we was asleep by 7 but then he wanted to get up for the day at 4.40!!! I left him until 5 but then he was getting loud (shouting/playing not crying) so I got up.

Getting to 2 naps is hard work. I'm not sure what to do when he gets up early, I obviously don't want him to have too much day time sleep because he will keep getting up early but I also want him to have enough sleep to not be OT  ::)

it can get a little messy when they are ready to drop the catnap but just cant handle the A times to do it. keep gradually increasing his first and second A times. if you think he needs the catnap (eg. like when you said it would be 5 hrs til bedtime) you can do a slightly later bedtime, no more than 30mins. that way wake up time should still be the same and just go back to regular bedtime when he has dropped the catnap. you may find he will switch every day or two between 2 nap and 3 nap days until he can handle longer A time.

forgot to add, when hunter has an ew, i keep him in his cot until usual wake up time. this did often mean me being in there with him once he started to fuss, keep lighting low, read some books or let him play with some soft toys, anything lowkey and pretty quiet. then at 'wake up' time, lights on or open curtains and i sang a silly 'wake up' song, but just talking about it being 'time to get up' would be fine too. then aim for normal nap time (or close to) like there was no ew. if you put him down too early it will encourage the ew.
