Ready for Big Girl Bed??
« on: June 26, 2009, 17:59:35 pm »
In just the past week, my 20 mo has started to show an interest in the grown up bed.  She is currently in a full sized crib and has been since she was 6 mo old.  She has never slept even one night in our bed (but she does like to play on it), so I am not really sure where this is coming from other than trying to mimic us.  Right now, she is in her bedroom wimpering b/c when I just put her down for nap, and told her "night night" she tried to run into the guestroom to get on the king sized bed.

Is this a cue she wants to be in a bigger bed?  I am content to keep her in her crib, where she is safer.  I do have a fully convertable crib that can easily be changed for this next step, I am just not sure she is ready.  I think she may just want to do what we are doing (i.e. sleeping in a large bed).

Thoughts?

Hmmm, I don't know, I'm keeping Nick in his crib till he's 10!
Sounds like she's wanting to be in one, but what is her temperament? Does she usually go down easy? I'm waiting till as late as possible to keep my spirited guy in the crib, but I know some folks make the transition easily before age 2- just a matter of your preference!

we switched DS to a toddler bed that has his crib mattress in it and is very low to the floor at 24 mo because he began trying to climb out of his crib.  We didn't want to wait until he made it and had a fall.  He almost immediately quit napping because he could get out of bed and walk around.  We put a gate on his doorway so he couldn't leave his room, but we couldn't prevent him getting out of bed.  Night sleeping was no problem, but he had always been a good night sleeper, not such a good napper (30-45 min as an infant).  He still doesn't nap at 3.5 yo except on swimming lesson days recently.  He has "quiet time" which is time he spends in his room for a rest and give me a break for 45-60 min a day after lunch.  He can play quietly, but can't leave his room until I come in and get him (doesn't always do this, will sometimes continually ask to come out).  New baby coming in July, so quiet time will remain in our schedule for a while.

My DD is 32 months and has been obsessed with beds since around your LO's age, I wouldn't take it as a cue to put her in BGB if I were you, we are only going to get a BGB next week for our DD, we were planning to wait until she was 3 but there will be so many things going on around that time we decided to do it now as she has asked for a bed. If you have no problems with the cot then I advise wait until she is older, you see so many people who have problems with the transition and it sems the older they are the smoother the transition! We were going to wait until Leorah was begging for a bed and she is almost at that stage now!

Thanks ladies.  She has never tried to climb out of her crib, so I am all for keeping her in it for as long as possible.  I know soon enough, she will be in (and subsequently, out) of the BGB.  I am sure I will wake up in the middle of the night with her little eyes staring at me, so why rush it.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder if it is part of the naptime/bedtime stalling tactics that she has recently begun (such as running to Daddy when she hears the bath going, and attempting to "hide" amidst the clothes in my closet).
