12 weeks old - wont sleep past 5.30am
« on: July 05, 2009, 19:19:17 pm »
Hi
I have a 12 week old son who has responded really well to his routine. The dream feed doesn't seem to work for him - when we tried it on several occasions it seemed to disturb his sleep and he would wake every 2 hours through the night.

Here is my current routine, any advice would be much appreciated:

Wakes 5.30am I put him in bed with me for another couple of hours
Up at 8 and fed (approx 4/5oz)
Play
Nap at 9.15 until about 10
Feed again at 11 (same amount)
Play
Nap from about 12.30 until 1.30
Feed again at 2pm (drinks slightly less than before)
Play
Nap from about 3 til 5pm
Feeds 5pm
Play and long walk outside when he may or may not nap in his buggy for a bit
Bath and massage 7.30pm
Sleep 8pm (he goes down awake and settled himself - sometimes needs a dummy but I remove it once he drops off)

He then usually wakes anytime from 2.30am to 4.30am. He sometimes settles at 2.30 without a feed but I only feed him once during the night - he eats between 3 to 4oz
Then he sleeps until aound 5.30 and I can't settle him again.

Any help would be lovely!

What happens if you just treat the 5.30am as a night feed, feed quickly and quietly in the dark and put him back in bed to sleep?

Hi there, my lo is also 12 weeks old.

About 3-4 weeks ago he would wake around 1am and then again around 4/5am.  I treated both as night feeds, kept his room dark, and didn't talk or try to interact with him (although i was still gentle and cuddled him) and put him straight back down in his cot after he was fed and winded.  After a while this meant that he would easily settle again after the 4/5am waking until around 7am.  It was at this point that i introduced the dream feed at around 10.30pm.  For the first few nights with the dream feed he still woke up twice before 7am, but was easy to settle, after about a week the dream feed must have started to work as he only started waking at around 5am.  I still treated this as a night feed and so he was always easy to settle again.  It is only recently that he has managed to sleep right through until 7am (although he has only done this twice), most of the time he still wakes at 5am or 6am, and i still treat this as a night feed.  I never have any problems getting him to settle down again and i believe this is because i treat all his night wakings the same.

Your lo might resist it at first but it would be worth treating the 5.30am waking as a night feed even if he only takes a couple of oz, or a drink of water and then putting him straight back down in bed.

Hope that was useful to you.

 :)

HI,

I had exact same problem until this week when I pushed the bed time forward from 7 pm to 6.30pm and made sure there was no more than 1 hour 15 mins between waking from nap and bed time. I also feed before bedtime, I notice you dont do that? DF really interupts my LO so I dont bother.

we are currently at:

5.15pm/5.30pm wake from nap and small feed
bath
6.15pm big feed
sleep by 6.30pm
wake 4pm feed
sleep til 7am

Hi

I did what Anna recommened too when my both of mine started waking at 5.30am.  I gave them a small feed and popped them back down, not taking them out of their rooms, treated it just like a night feed.

My dd eventually just dropped that feed naturally and slept through till 7.00am, my ds needed a little encouragement to go back to sleep when he started waking at that time, but not from hunger.  Having said that, it was only 5 nights of continuing to try and settle him before he got the message.

They do eventually get the message if you keep plodding on with the routine!  Bless them...  ::)

I think there is some great advice above.  There is always a little trial and error as every baby is different.  It has been shocking to me how just changing the times a bit can make a huge difference.  Try pushing the bedtime up a bit.  You could also try tanking them up to see how they would respond to that.  And, they may be more alert during the time you are trying the dreamfeed so trying it at a different time may work better.
