Throwing lovey out of crib
« on: July 13, 2009, 21:31:31 pm »
Lately, my DS (23 months) has taken a liking to tossing his lovey out of the crib after we put him down for a nap. He then yells for his lovey, then gets upset, so we walk in, get the lovey, hand it to him and walk back out. Is this ok, or anything else we should be doing?

Do you just have to do it once?  If it's just once then I don't see it as a problem.  If it is more of a stalling tactic then you may have to set a limit as to how many times you will go back to retrieve them for him.

Ds did this when he was not quite ready to sleep.  I would retrieved them for him but only twice.  Thankfully he doesn't do it anymore.

So far just once and then he's quiet. If he does it a few times - do you just leave it in the room wherever he throws it and do walk in and walk out - he gets really upset w/out that lovey.

You could treat it like a wi-retrieve-wo if he gets really upset.  If he is quiet then just let him be.  When ds did this, I would only retrieve it twice.  He did learn to stop throwing his lovies out.  Once ds is asleep, I would put his lovies back into the crib.

EJ just started this too, thou again only once... I picked it up walked out and she went to sleep. But I have been thinking  about what to do if it escalates. ::)
My plan will be to put in two lovies the same and attach one SAFELY to the cot somehow......
If that doesn't work, I like the wi/wo method!

Thanks Mimi 2. When you only did it twice, would your son get upset and cry or just fall asleep w/out it? If my DS doesn't have his - he CRIES, CRIES...

After the second time, he did get upset but it was very shortlived.  Maybe less than 1 minute then he would lay back down to sleep.  I treat it like a mantra cry. I did have to re-evaluate what time to put him to bed as I remembered it was roughly the same time he needed more A time.

I was JUST thinking that I need to look at my DS schedule because he's doing some funky stuff lately - taking awhile to fall asleep for nap and bedtime. Do you mind posting what schedule your DS is on because it looks they are very close in age.

Here's what his day is like for the last few weeks:

6:30-7 am wake
12 pm nap for about 1.5hrs (sometimes it's 60 min)
7:15-7:30 pm bed

His nap & bed time is roughly the same give or take 15-30 min.  I like to keep the times the same but downplay the activity prior to sleep if he seems tired earlier than usual.  DS has a habit of EWs if I don't "enforce" the set times.
