My cousin just called me for help. I told her that we used ready to serve Similac organic for a short time when I couldn't nurse and that my milk allergic baby did fine with it, but nothing else (no other formulas and no powder/mixed kind. I do not recommend soy long term.

She said that WIC will only pay for infamil. What formula would you recommend? She is not breastfeeding at all.  He is 8 months old.

If she has a doctor's diagnosis of a milk allergy/intolerance will WIC not pay for it then? Surely they have some program in place for babies who need formula for special medical purposes?    If her LO is milk allergic for certain then she would need to use a hypoallergenic formula such as Similac Alimentum or Nutramigen, possibly even Neocate (which is stupidly expensive).

What has her paed advised?

Ugh, here is the sticky part. The doctor keeps insisting that the baby isn't allergic. He says babies do not have food allergies. He is not open to testing at all. He wants to do invasive tests and surgery! She switched him to soy and he is better already.

My babies had severe reflux, intestinal problems and breathing problems and it was all due to food sensitivity. Even docs who are open to the idea of food allergies don't think babies have them (like her doctor), or they think that only the kind that show up on an allergy test are valid. From my experience they are wrong.

My first doctor was like that too, so I switched back to the doctor I grew up with.  Can you get a second opinion?  First call around to find a doctor you truly believes in Food Allergies AND Food Intolerances.  Because allergy testing will not prove if the child has a food intolerance, and usually that's what it ends up being.

Similac Organic is not a hypoallergenic formula, so not suitable for babies with milk allergy or intolerance, so if she is certain that her LO does have a problem with milk proteins then it's not a wise choice for her. Soy would be better than a milk based formula.  Enfamil makes Nutramigen in the US, so can she not get that?  Or is it only one type of Enfamil that they will give her?

If her doctor thinks that the baby is not milk allergic but wants to do an invasive surgery, it does sound like there is a bit more going on....if she's not happy with her doctor's diagnosis can she not ask for a second opinion?
