NW at 1am playing, fussing, talking for an hour!
« on: September 20, 2009, 13:04:35 pm »
my son has started waking in the middle of the night and talking/playing/fussing for an hour. He used to sleep through the night, but this week these NW have started. It starts when I hear him fuss,  I lay there to see what he'll do and I hear him talking to himself, kicking, basically making all the same noises he makes in the morning when it's time to get up. I've tried to go in shh/pat, but it doesn't work. I go back to bed where he'll usually calm himself and fall back asleep an hour or so after he woke up. We are battling sort naps, but here is our schedule.

6:15 wake up, fuss...and fall back asleep after laying in bed for 30ish minutes for another 45 minute or so (this just started happenning, I used to get him up right away, but accidentally found out that he falls back asleep, so I've been letting him.....is that a mistake/what is causing the NW?)

Hopefully this is written in a way you can understand :) his naps are usually always 9,12,3 and eating just naturally falls into place. So WHAT IN THE WORLD is causing him to be up just chillin at 1am?

Hi there, we have similar issues.  Finn was 6 months on the 19th and chaos has ensued yet again.  Naps haven't been this bad since around 16 weeks *sigh*

Two things usually cause NW (well three but you probably have already ruled out hunger? there is a 6 month GS too) - OT and looking for more A time.  It seems like he is short-napping - is he just a short napper due to his biorhythms or do you find him to get OT by the end of the day?  The ideal is that they have 2 solid day naps and no CN - or at least working towards dropping the CN as their A increases towards 2 hr 45 mins - 3 hours.  We always end up with early bedtime because my beautiful DS just refuses the CN...if I try to get him to sleep any time after 4 p.m. - forget it.  The only thing that has a chance of working is driving and I just can't be driving around every day.  He normally goes to bed beautifully, except with his short napping lately we are getting quite a few OT bedtimes...I hate it when they change it up on us hehe.
The tweaking never stops!

We are getting a few more longer naps sprinkled around the 45 minute naps. Yesterday he had 1 2hr nap and 2 40 minute naps. Then this morning he had an 1hr15min nap, and and then this afternoon he woke promptly at 35 minutes, so I'm guessing  that naps was OT (however, I try and keep the A (2hr20ish min) the same, and it yields different results...why?). If he wakes before 3, I always try and squeeze in a CN, but sometimes they end around 5, which pushes our bedtime back slightly. How long is your sons A time? It appears that are only days apart in age (3/16 birthday). When he wakes in the morning, he usually stays awake around 2.25-2.5 and then if he takes a good morning nap I try going closer to the 2.5, but maybe it's too long. Are you struggling with the 40ish minute naps too?
