so tired of shhh-"pat"
« on: October 02, 2009, 03:53:24 am »
ug! I'm exhausted! I need some BW-guru to come live with me for a week and help me get this right!

I have posted a question before about using dummy to transition through the 45min intruder nad got the impression it was a good idea.  Well lately that's not been working either (I'd previously given up on shhh-"pat" to get AG back to sleep but decided today to do a combo of both after watching mum do something similar which got AG back to sleep after she'd only napped for TWENTY FIVE MINS!  Well she did the stupidly short nap again this time and so i thought - ok worked for mum I'll give it a shot - tried for 40mins before giving up and what do you know it's been a whole two mins and I've not heard a peep!

BUT... and this is a PITB!... AG is not gaining weight very well (only 40gms in last week - due to feeding/reflux issues which I'm getting help for elsewhere though I may put this on the R.B too) and the hospital docs have said three hourly feeds on the dot - i.e I just spent FOURTY mins getting her to slee and I'm going to have to wake her up in another TEN!!! ARGH!!!

Will say more on hospital ultimatums elsewhere...

flipping heck!!!

Hugs, you are going through a lot just now.  Shush/pat is a great technique but you need a lot of patience and perseverance with it - and when going through so much and lack of sleep, we don't always have that.  Your LO is not likely to respond well to sleep training with reflux and medical issues abound.

So I would say while you are dealing with all this stuff it is really ok to APOP and use props if you need them because when you both feel better you can worry about sleep training.
The tweaking never stops!

I have to agree with Wendy, unfortunatley i dont think you are going to see much success of anything with the issues your LO has. That doesnt mean you shouldnt try to have some sort of structure to your day but with your LO being in pain most of the time the normal sleep training methods just wont work, she needs comfort more than anything. Put yourself in her shoes and see if you can see it any differently.

Just do whatever you need to do to get her to sleep and when she is better you can focus on sleep training.

(((HUGS))) i know its hard. keep hanging in there

I just wanted to say that I completely understand how you feel.  I started a thread called "Why won't she learn to go to sleep already?".  On that day, I had had it up to my eyeballs with shh/pat, since I felt I always went in at 40 mins to help her back to sleep and really, that's no fun, right?  My DD has silent reflux, but I think it seems to be getting better with Enfamil thickened/AR, so I don't notice her in as much pain anymore.  Could be that she is starting to outgrow it too, not sure.  Hang in there, I know it's tough.  I have sooo little patience sometimes, and with PPD, it makes it even harder.  If anyone understands what you're going through, it's definitely me!  Lots of ((hugs))!
