Some Questions for the Experts!
« on: October 21, 2009, 15:01:22 pm »
Hello,

My son is almost 9 months old.  Our usual day is as follows:
7:00 bottle
9:00 cereal
10:00 bed for 1.5 hrs
11:30 bottle
1:30 -2:00 lunch
2:30 – 3:00 bed for 1.5 hrs
4:30 bottle
6:30 dinner
7:15 bath
7:30 bottle
8:00 bed
10:30 dream feed
He has been breast fed until two weeks ago at which point I weaned him (he has 8 teeth and bit me one too many times).  He will never take more than 6 oz of formula in a feed. For activity time he is on the go crawling and pulling himself to stand up on all of the furniture, his activity times last at least 3 hours sometimes 4 in the evening.
His nighttime routine is bath, bottle, swaddle, sit and bed.  He does use a suckie and is still swaddled to go to sleep.  He has only slept through the night about 10 times.  He used to wake once around 4:00 and would go back to sleep with some help.
Lately (it seems since I am not breastfeeding) he is having frequent night wakings.  The past few nights he has went to bed about 30 minutes later than usual around 8:30, but goes down easily.  He has also been refusing his dream feed (which I know I need to eliminate).  Through the night for the past few nights he has been waking between 1:00 and 4:00 3 or 4 times, I wondered if it was because I was interrupting his sleep offering a dream feed that he doesn’t seem to want.  I usually stay with him doing PU/PD to get him back to sleep, but the past two nights he would not settle after 2 hrs so I gave up and brought him to bed with us because my husband has to work and I am exhausted.
Another issue is that he will stand up in his crib when he wakes up now.  We were in good shape for a long time with only one quick night wake and I just feel like I don’t know what has happened.  I have a few questions and any advice would be much appreciated.

Should he be having two 1.5 hr naps in a day still for his age or should one be shorter?
Should he be going to bed earlier than 8:00 – 8:30?
Should I be changing our daily routine at this age?
Should or can I eliminate his dream feed abruptly as he is starting to refuse it?
I feel that when I do PU/PD I am holding him too long, could someone verify what I should do at his age?
What do you suggest about standing up in his crib in the middle of the night?

Thank you so much,
Burtty

this is fine

we often do 13 hours days, its hard not to when they spend more time awake during the day

Should I be changing our daily routine at this age?
it looks fine to me
Should or can I eliminate his dream feed abruptly as he is starting to refuse it?
Yes i would try and just drop it, he will let you know if its too sudden

I feel that when I do PU/PD I am holding him too long, could someone verify what I should do at his age?
only pick him up if he puts his arms out to you otherwise do all settling in the cot, we dotn pick up at all, we pat our 9 month old
What do you suggest about standing up in his crib in the middle of the night?
let him have HEAPS of practise during the day, weve never had to worry about this during the night because pretty much all of his A time is spent doing the pulling up, crawling etc during the day

i think personally its the DF thats the problem, so hopefully by dropping it you will get a full nights sleep :)

Hope that helps :)
