Foods containing milk question
« on: November 04, 2009, 09:01:55 am »
Hi - I struggle to get 20oz of breast/formula a day into my almost 7month old so just wondering if anyone could tell me if cow's milk in food can be counted as part of the daily milk intake? Or does it have to be formula? Also, how much milk is a yoghurt "worth"??! I mean, does 5oz yoghurt = 5oz milk? Or is it more? TIA

milk hidden in things can definitely count to their daily total!! if you lo is only 6 months old i would stick to forumla if you add it, but as he gets bigger, then normal milk can be added to most meals.

not sure about the yogurt.

Any extra dairy in solids do count in the daily intake.  As for the equivalent of yogurt to formula, calorie-wise it is equivalent (depending on brand).  However, there are so many other minerals and vitamins that are in bm/formula that are not in yogurt.  I think that it is fine to include yogurt into your lo's diet but it should not replace bm/formula at this age.

Here's a very informative article on yogurt from Dr. Sears.  http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T045700.asp

I wouldn't worry too much, the lower end of the guidelines is 21.  What I did is add some "milk" to all sorts of things.  I would not offer cows milk itself until close to, if not after 12 months.  I offered formula, yogurt and things made of these products.  I offered him an oz of formula to his cereal even though I added more water then what an oz would be.  I gave my LO cereal 3 times a day at 7 months so that is 3 oz extra right there.  Around 8 months, I offered natural, full fat (mine is 6.5%), gelatin free yogurt.  About a tablespoon at first and then more.  You can mix it with fruit puree, usually a "cube" to sweeten it.  I did this and still do for a snack in the am or pm.  Around this time, I also started to make "casserols" like mini pastini noodles (smaller then rice), protein and veggies and "white sauce" using formula instead of milk.  I even grate cheddar cheese into it.  My lo has a milk protein intolerance and it all worked out fine so you should have even more luck.  Hope this helps.
