How will I know dd is finally ready for just 1 nap?
« on: January 26, 2010, 19:39:39 pm »
My 14 month old dd is now taking a 20 minute nap in the morning (I have to wake her from this one) and then an hour 20 or so nap in the afternoon. She has 3 hours and 20-45 minutes of A time in between the 2 naps.

How will I know she's ready to move to one nap? I know some people go back and forth between 2 and 1, but how will I know she's ready to start trying one nap at least part of the time?

Also, this transition phase has been going on for quite a while now (a good few months since we started shortening the first nap.) Can someone give me a typical timeline for this? How much longer will we be in transition? Again, my daughter is 14 months old, if knowing her age helps at all.

Thanks for reading!!

DS has just turned a year and recently went to 1 sleep (although he sleeps for the length of time of his 2 sleeps put together) ... we went somedays where he had 2 sleeps a day then the next he had just one.  Some days he still has 2 but not often.  I think it really depends on the individual (DS was sleeping 1.25 hrs am and 2+ pm and now sleeps up to 3 hrs in the afternoon, sometimes less).

Why don't babies come with manuals, eh?!?!

A personalized manual would, indeed, be helpful!

My biggest concern about moving to one nap is that I'd have to put her down early (noon-ish at the latest, probably earlier) and then she'd probably only sleep for 1.5 hours. If she wakes at 1:30 PM, she'll have a tough time making it to a 6:30 or 7 PM bedtime, but if I put her to sleep any earlier, she will likely wake up early. I really want to avoid 5:30 AM wake ups again!!

my kids have gone from 2 naps to 1 nap on their own... then they have been a bit tired at 5 pm or so but then I just had to keep them occupied for 1-2 hours more with dinner, taking a bath, playing etc... then after a few weeks they aren't tired until 6-7 pm...

DS always went for his pm nap around 1.30 but recently I have been giving him his lunch between 11.30 and 11.45 then putting his straight to bed ... and was surprised that he was still wakening at the same time (around 3pm) :)  On rare occassions when he doesn't sleep as late as 3pm (with a 6/6.30pm bedtime) I try to get him to have a little nap or usually just put him to bed really early (6pm) and hope for the best ...

I made the switch at 15 months. Just because I was tired of thinking about it, figured he 'should' be old enough (based on what others were doing) and I felt like it would be easier on both of us to go to one nap. And it would fit in better with his daycare. We had been doing a short (20mins) am nap and long pm one for several months.

He was a bit OT for the first few days but by the end of the first week his one nap was already getting longer.

Following along with interest as in same boat  ::)

DS was having short morning nap and 1.5 in afternoon but recently refusing that 2nd nap even with further cutting of morning so have decided to just go for it and see what happens!  :-\

This is his second day of just one nap and so far so good although he's not sleeping as long as I would like just yet - am hoping he will extend once gets used to it so for now am doing slightly early bedtime too and if it looks as if its all going pear shaped will throw in the odd 2 nap days  ;) but fingers crossed.....

Hope it works out for you xx

Hi,
Henry is 15 months - short napper and low sleep needs! Kind of needs 2 naps for as long as possible as he is an early riser - 6/6.30am and only sleeps an hour and a half - an hour and forty in the day so bedtime is early. If I cut to one nap I am scared it will be too short and will be too early so A time before bed will be too long etc etc.
I think we will have to switch soon as his A time is getting long even after a 20 min am nap. x

Becky, you might find he starts sleeping longer when you make the switch - it's a possibility. Stan NEVER took 2hr naps until he was on 1 nap.
