9 month old daytime sleep
« on: October 30, 2009, 15:37:20 pm »
My LO is 9 months old and sleeps a solid 12 hours a night.  Her A time is 3 1/2 hours.  My issue now is that if you add up night time sleep and A time we are only left with 1 1/2 hours for nap time or day time sleep.  Currently she takes a 1 hour nap and a 30 minute nap and always wakes cranky from this 30 minute nap.  I can get her to extend this nap but if I do then I will be putting her to bed later.
So, my question is should I just leave things as they are or should I cut out some night time sleep so she takes better naps during the day???
I'm terrified that she is learning the art of short naps and that when we transition to 1 nap a day we will be stuck with a short nap.
Any advice is appreciated.

What is her routine? 13 hours total sleep is actually on the low side. Given the nap lengths that you posted, I would guess that your LO is OT. Our routine at 9 months was:

7:30: wake
10:30-12: nap
3-4:30: nap
7:30: bed

This worked well until we had to shorten the am nap to 1 hour at 10.5 months.

Our routine right now looks like:
7:00 wake
10:30 nap #1
11:30 wake
3:00 nap #2
3:30 wake
7:00 bed

We just went to 3 1/2 hours A time because at 3:15 A time we were having a 30 minute nap in the morning.  This so far has seemed to help.  Should I cut back total night sleep to get better naps (if it'll work).  I'm afraid like I said before that she will learn the art of short naps.

Hi there, dont touch your night sleep!!! thank God for a good sleeper lol, what i can see here is that her second A tme is too long, yes she can handle 3.5 hours A time for the first one but after only an hour sleep you need to cut back the A time.
heres what we do:

7am wake (3 hours 45mins A time)
10.45 - 11.45 nap #1 (remember our A time is slightly more so dont follow exactly)
Awake 3 hours 15-20mins (depending on how tired he is, i usually watch for tired signs here as well)
3 -4.30 nap 2
Awake 3 hours 45 mins (because he has had a full sleep he can handle the full A time)
8.15 bed

so have a play around with her second A time to see what you get :)

Thanks so much.  I will give it a go today.  She is down for her 1st nap after 3 1/2 hours A time this morning but she didn't get a full 12 hours last night because she woke very early this morning (might have to do with the time change we just barely had).  We'll see what naps we get today:) Thanks for the advice.  I appreciate it greatly.

Thanks tons calebsmummy!!!  For some reason it didn't occur to me that my LO wasn't getting a good rest with just 1 hour of sleep.  So I've made the changes you suggested and after 3 1/2 hours A time  my LO will take a 1 hour nap.  Then I've adjusted to putting her down for her 2nd nap after just 3 hours A time and then I get a 1 1/2 hours nap.  Hope it lasts!!!
Do you think my 3 1/2 hours A time is off if I'm only getting a 1 hour nap in the morning?? I've tried 3:45 A time before and still get a 1 hour nap.

i think its fine, as they get to this age you need to make it a bit shorter to be able to fit all the naps in without having a really long day, we do a 1 hour nap in the morning (i have to wake him though) so its fine. As long as shes happy with it!
