how long should it take them to fall asleep for a nap
« on: November 21, 2009, 07:38:17 am »
Hi
i found the information on this board so helpfull so i decided to ask another question.
11 week old, usually goes down to sleep quit easily, at times with dummy at others without. usually it depends if he fights the cuddle before bed or not (if fight go with dummy, if not fight - without). I put him down and leave the room cause i found that that helped him fall asleep quicker than if i stay and become stimulus. However sometimes he will seem tired, give a yawn, and even become a bit fussy. i will do the ritual, put him down and leave and this is how it will go - he will start cooing to himself (very cute), then coughing twice (still cute), then a giggle (favourite part), then start a couple of cry outs seperated by silence. then more frequent but still not continuos, then 2-3 times out of 10 will fall asleep and 7 out of 10 will start crying. all of this description can be as long as 45 minutes before the cry. settling him would take anywhere between a couple of minutes to much 15 minutes - and might need to go in twice at times but he essentially would be fine at the end of it. obviously this cuts into nap time a lot and he is usually over tired becuase of this but patting or shushing him when i put him down just seems to stimulate him more. should i be going in earlier or is this just part of the learning process?
BTW - sorry for grammer and spelling, english not my first langauge.
will appreciate opinions.

What a great question! And your grammar was EXCELLENT! Wouldn't have even thought you non-native English speaker if you hadn't mentioned it!  :)

so very sweet how you described all his cute little habits! LOL!  We consider 20 min a 'healthy' or average amt of time for a baby to fall asleep.  More than that and it does start putting them into OT land and means that naps were mistimed.  I think since you have success with LO falling asleep on his own many times that I would treat those times where he struggles as a mistimed nap issue; if that's the case, we really can't expect an OT/UT baby to fall asleep without a little assistance.  So I see no problem with you going in sooner than the full on cry and just doing whatever soothing seems to help.  I think you are smart to leave him be for a bit -- 5 to 10 min -- but once you can see it's just not going to happen, then I'd probably go back in and give a little help.  Like I said, we know he *can* sleep independently, so when he's struggling it's probably because he wasn't in sleep window when you put him down.

My advice: intervene a little sooner and then take a look at what might have gone differently or that A time.  If you can see that you put him down 5-10 minutes later than normal, take note.  At this age, 5-10 minutes is enough time to throw them off their sleep stride.

Good luck! You sound like such a loving mama!  :)
