Mantra crying - trying to understand!
« on: November 14, 2009, 16:15:08 pm »
I have seen mantra crying referred to on here a number of times and I think I understand what it is but want to be sure I am doing the right thing for my baby when he is mantra crying. So I have a few questions:

1. Firstly to check that I know when it is a mantra cry and am not mistaking it - I think his cry is like a long whine cry punctuated every so often by one or two short cries that sound like coughs. It stays at the same volume but can go on for over ten minutes sometimes, never more than 15. It is very different from his distressed type of crying which is more of a sobbing and escalates. Does that sound right?

2. So when he is doing that cry I understand that it is best to leave them as they are trying to soothe themselves. Should I stay in the same room? Although it is not a distressed cry he always sounds so sad when doing this cry so I feel mean not comforting him but the few times I left him he has then fallen asleep on his own.

3. Yesterday I went in after he had been mantra crying for about 6/7 mins. I ssh/patted him and he stopped the cry and fell asleep almost immediately. Is it ok to help him like that or am I then making myself a prop?

4. How do we know that mantra crying is ok and that leaving them is not just another form of CIO?

Thanks for your help!!!

I think if the mantra cry is going on for over 10mins i would go in and pat him to sleep, hes obviously still struggling to self soothe
