2 yr old still EW. Do i need to adjust schedule
« on: November 15, 2009, 19:45:00 pm »
Hi

My 2 yr old is still having EW. She gets up anywhere from 515-530. Usually we have about 2 days a month where she will sleep to 6. I am not sure what I do different of those days, but I would like to try and get her to sleep at least still 6.
Not sure if i need to adjust her schedule at all
530 - wake
1230-230 nap
7 bed

I know that it is a long stretch from morning till nap, but she  is in daycare and they cant put her down any earlier.
Is 2 hrs too long for a nap? Should I shorten it? We have tried putting her to bed at 630, but she is just not tired since she has only been up for 4 hours. She wakes up in the morning very happy.
She I put her to bed a little later hoping she will sleep a little longer in the morning?

Any suggestions

Yes, since she's been 7 months old.

What have you tried to extend the EWings? Have you tried WI/WO? Does she have block out blinds in her room? Could she be cold at all?

Her room is very dark and i know that she is not cold as she is in a sleep sack at night

i have tried wake to sleep but that has  never worked. she is a very light sleeper.
Yes tried wI/WO, but when she is up at 530 she is up, there is no going back to sleep for her.
Not sure if this is just her or not. She is only getting 10.5 hrs or so a night.

Hi, I wish I could help but we are experiencing "EXACTLY" the same thing and our routine matches yours.  We have also started to get a short nap at lunchtime quite often - only 1hr and occasional NWs too.  The difference with us is that the EWs have just started (probably about a 3-4 weeks ago).  Previously he was waking between 6-6.30.  Your exact routine worked for us for so long and suddenly (overnight) everything changed.  I'll be interested to hear your responses to your post!

You don't want to hear this but..... 10.5 hours at night is sometimes enough.  My kids have only and always slept 10 hours at night, sometimes 10.5.  The only extension happened when my oldest dropped his nap entirely (at 3.75 yrs) so that he now sleeps 11-12 hrs every night with a nap once a week, at most, to get a little caught up.  Last night he was asleep at 7:30 and is still asleep now at 7am.  My youngest is my ew'er.  He is in bed between 7 and 8 and then wakes at 5 or 6am.  I hate it but he has NEVER slept more than 10hrs and he takes a 2.5-3 hour nap every day, so a total of 13 hours a day.  Normal, sadly.  Last night, he didn't go to bed until 8:15 (because we tried 2 naps since he was up at 5am yesterday morning) and woke at 6:15.  Unfortunately, he was awake at 3, for over an hour.  I would rather be up early than be up in the night.  I guess we won't do 2 naps again...

Sorry, I went off a bit.  The best thing for you to try, and I am no expert, is to try to shift the entire day ahead so that bedtime is later and then hopefully you get a later wakeup.  The shift means all meals/sleep etc move ahead by 10-15 mins every several days- don't rush it though.  The 2 hour nap is great- I wouldn't be shortening it, if I were you.  And the nap seems to be timed ok since she is sleeping for 2 hours.  You could def try a later bedtime, maybe 7:15?  Might get you closer to 6am.
HTH, Keep us posted!
