Could just be a blocked duct. I had this about 2 months ago.
I pumped and fed as often as possible. Try different ways to feed too - like dangling your boob in Sienna's mouth. I also dangled my boob in a bowl of warm water, massaged it and then pumped or fed.
I think mine was probably caused from not emptying the boob.
I actually had two tiny red spots on my boob!!
The uncomfortableness probably went after about 3 days - how are you this morning?

Thanks so much everyone!
It's a bit less sore this morning, but itchy kind of. I pumped a bit but hardly got any as wouldn't get a letdown to the pump ::), fed lots on that side, and massaged gently while she was feeding. I'm hoping to get a chance to take a shower today as can just imagine how nice the hot water would feel on it, but you know what it's like... not always easy to get time. I do think the main cause must be that she's not been draining the beast well with her short feeds as there seems to be lots of milk available, and at night she hardly feeds at all for being so little. She's been going 5-6 hrs at night :o Doing another post on that, but it may be part of the reason for this???

A little update. The itchiness got worse and turned out to be thrush. Copied and pasted this from my other post about Sienna's night feeds:
I've just been to see the baby clinic nurse and she said it's thrush but couldn't see any in Sienna's mouth, only on my nipples so far, and you can only actually see it on one of them but the other has gone itchy too a bit today so have to treat both with an anti-fungal cream I could get over the counter. She said to swab sienna's mouth with a mix of bicarbonate of soda and water after every feed too. I hope it helps quickly as I'm really itchy and uncomfortable. Feels like I want to scratch my nipples off! :-X
Sienna is doing really well weight wise, had put on 110g in 3 days! so she's obviously a very fast feeder and getting lots of milk in a short time so no need to worry about her which is great.

Anybody got experience of thrush? Is it something that re-occurs easily and if so any ideas on how to prevent it?

Yep, I had that as well as mastitis, never seemed to effect L, I was told to rub the cream in my nips before feeding her. I would now and then feel a bit itchy again but had the cream, I can't remember if I took pills too or if thatw as for the mastitis  ???

It's great that Sienna is such a fast feeder, L was like that and I used to feel sorry for the others at my mother group that would have their boobs out for an hour, it seemed they were endlessly feeding!

I had thrush for several months as the doctor did not treat it correctly so unfortunately it became really resistant to treatment and became quite severe.  I was in so much pain in the end (far, far worse than when I had mastitis) that I was practically screaming out when feeding Ben....horrid.  SO, I'm not trying to scare you ( :)!) just wanted to say make sure you really do everything you can to get rid of it quickly.  I think we had it worse because Ben had to take antibiotics for something, and so did I for mastitis, and then of course the thrush gets worse  ::).

Try buying some super-strong friendly bacteria capsules for you to take, cut down on sugar, and I even put the friendly bacteria stuff on my nipples at nightime( :-[) as well as white vinegar after every feeding before I put the thrush cream on.....ooh, the glamour of breastfeeding!!  I also boiled all of my feeding bras regularly, changed my breastpads really frequently, and anything else that came into contact with me (towels etc).

Also, if your lo has a dummy/paci make sure it is sterilised in Milton regularly (kills viruses unlike steam sterilising) to make sure that any thrush is killed.  Make sure that you get something to treat the inside of her mouth otherwise you might just end up reinfecting each other (which is what happened to Ben and I despite all my safety-measures! :().

Anyway, I haven't read the link which Canwi posted, so it's probably got all of this on it!  Just wanted to say some of the things which helped us.  The KellyMom website has got some excellent advice on it too.

hope yours just gets sorted quickly though!  :-* :-* :-*

Claire that sounds like a nightmare! Now I remember thrush was much more painful than mastitis, when I got my let down I felt like I was having electric shocks through my boobs and it would happen during feeding too, ouch, ouch, ouch! I hope yours is getting better Vick  :-* :-*

Sorry I just posted the link and no explanation Vick.  Was pumping and eating breakfast at the time, so was short a hand or two! ;)
All the info you've had so far is indeed included on that link as well as other useful info.
I got external and then ductal thrush with both my boys.  It's nasty and I hope yours heals quickly
