Help! Stuck in a rut
« on: December 01, 2009, 07:30:01 am »
Hi,

DS is 8 months next week and is a textbook baby (except for when it comes to solids!).  He is VERY slow going with solids.  He eats his puree, but only ones that have apples in it (straight up or mixed with a small amount of another fruit).  He will only take a few spoons of yams or squash before flinging it around.  He won't let us spoon feed him and prefers to feed himself, so we load up the spoon and hand it to him.

With finger foods, we have given him toast, French toast (aka eggy bread), roasted yam wedges, steamed broccoli, steamed baby carrots, cheerios, firm tofu, strips of chicken breast, grapes, and baby mum-mums.  Of all of the above, only the plain toast, cheerios, and baby mum-mums have been eaten --the rest ends up on the floor after being squashed.  He didn't even try the broccoli, tofu, or chicken.

Since we've been met with limited success, I've started to get a little disheartened by all the wasted food , time, and effort and more than a little worried about DS getting enough iron in his diet and the fact that protein hasn't entered the equation yet.  Thus the rut as I've been going back to the standby of applesauce with rice cereal and a bit of dry toast for almost each meal.   :(

Help!  How do I get out of this rut?  Should I be offering him the same thing for each meal for a few days so he gets used to eating whatever it is we are serving him before introducing something else?  When it comes to everything else, DS is pretty open to new things, but when it comes to solids, he seems quite particular about what he wants to try.

Does this mean DS is not ready for BLW and I should carry on with purees?

Hi and welcome to BW!

BLW is mainly about following the baby's lead in eating solids.  The food offered are mainly regular food that are easily managed by a baby to pick up and eat (mushed/gummed & swallow).  There is no spoon feeding from the mother/caregiver.  Here's a more detailed explanation of BLW  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=92560.0

Is he ready for BLW?

Technically he is as he can manipulate the food into his mouth.  Continue to offer more choices and his current favorites at mealtime.  You can cut back on the food wastage by offering a few items at a time.  Do not feel discourage with his limited diet right now.  In fact he is doing very well.  Meats tend to be a little more difficult for los to get used too.  Some moms found that by offering meat in a different form (strips, nuggets or grounded) proved more successful.  Check out some great recipes in here  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?board=10.0

Should you continue with purees?

This is up to you, however I would use this opportunity (eagerness at self-feeding/mastery at pincher grip) to increase more texture into his diet. You can still use the purees as dips for him.

Should you serve the same thing for several days until he gets used to it?

Hmmm...this is a personal choice.  Some moms feel that this can/will encourage their los to eat what is being served.  However IMHO, 8 mos is really too young too for this.  Solids in the first year is mainly to introduce new tastes and new textures and to form a positive association with food.  As bm/formula provides all the nutrients and calories a baby needs in the first 12 mos, solids shouldn't be "forced" on a baby.

HTH

Of course, it can take many many offerings before a new food is accepted, so you need to balance this.  Maybe serve a meal consisting of something new and something he likes.  If after a few offerings and the new food is not accepted, take a few days/weeks break and try again.

Thanks for the advice and the link to additional resources!!!!

I have been trying to order the BLW book, but it's not available to order from at the big national chain bookstore here (odd) --will have to try online at amazon or something.

Following your advice, we opted for the middle ground.  We have been using the purees with rice or mixed grain cereal as dips so he gets some iron, and his favorite finger foods along with new ones at each meal (usually a bit of table food).  After reading some of the other threads/posts, I have retried banana and introduced a whole pear, both of which he really enjoyed feeding himself!!!

Thanks for the words of encouragement --I feel a lot better and things have been going much better in the last few days!!! :D
