7 week old...naps need work!
« on: December 11, 2009, 01:26:13 am »
Hi guys! Need a bit of help with my EASY, my technique..or something!
A 1.5 to 2 hour nap is a rare thing in my house right now...and Im trying to figure out why this is.
So our easy looks like this on most days:

7am wake, feed
740 change, wind down
800-asleep ( on a fairly good day)

900-910-awake ( I try to get her back down with sh/pat, but she is really absolutely awake...and gets red, hot and sweaty if I continue to try to get her back to sleep. It usually ends in me bringing her downstairs feeding her earlier than planned.
945-1000 feed
1030 change, wind down, she usually is very easy to put down for this nap, so asleep within 10-15 min of when she goes to her crib

130-awake (this is fairly typical for her to sleep thru till the next feed)feed
210-change, wind down
230-asleep

310-320-awake (same thing as the first nap happens, I try to hold her off, but feed her a bit earlier than "planned")
345-400 feed somewhere in this time frame depending on her
415-430-change, wind down try to put her back to sleep but it is extremely difficult to get her down for her cat nap-I sometimes take her for a drive just to she sleeps, so she won't be so tired for bed time. from 3-6 is a loooong time to go for someone so small!!!

600 cluster feed, bath, massage, story
630 feed again
sleep by 700 without a problem--bed times are the easiest thing, which Im happy for.

1030 dream feed

Anytime between 2 & 330 am she wakes for a feed of about 3.5-4 ounces and usually sleeps till 645 or 7
The odd day she might wake up at 5 or 6, but I can usually pat/sh her back to sleep at these times.

So a few questions..I have tried to go in at the 40 min mark to help her transition to the next sleep cycle--has worked once..I am debating trying white noise, or a hair dryer or SOMETHING to help her go past 40 minutes..but am a bit scared to try as Im not 100% sure how to incorporate this??

Also, if your day starts at 645-7 am most days, if there is a night where she is a bit hard to settle after the 2-3am feed, would allowing her to sleep till 8am cause her to be hungry at the "usual" times? ie 10, 1 etc....we had this situation today where she had eaten at 8, but by 10 am she was ready to eat again...??

Any advice is as always, greatly appreciated!!!

Honestly it sounds like she is doing GREAT! That long second nap is really restorative. It can take a few months before they're consistently able to take longer naps. Re white noise, you would just turn it on when you do your wind-down. An electric fan uses less power than a hairdryer! Or you can download womb sounds or other white noise tracks and play them on repeat on an ipod or similar. Would she take her catnap easier in a sling? I'd be tempted to pop her in a sling or wrap after that 3.45pm feed and wear her in there until bedtime - even if she doesn't nap, she will be relaxed and less stimulated just from being close to you, and might doze on and off.
