9 Month Baby, when do you start weaning milk feeds?
« on: December 29, 2009, 09:52:15 am »
So Rose is now 9 months, the HV says she should be on two, maybe three feeds at most at her age and at the moment she is still having five feeds a day!  When can I drop a feed, and what is the best one to drop first?

She feeds at:
3:00 Need to work on dropping this, but haven't had much luck
6:00
10:00
14:00
18:00

Thanks

Cate

Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? I ask because the recommendations are different. Bfing it's recommended to stay at 4 feeds until at least 10mo, but with no rush to drop a feed at that point (we were at 4 feeds until just over 13mo!) Many bottle fed los drop a feed sooner than bfed, but even still should be on 3 feeds until roughly a year (I think, someone with more bottle feeding exp may correct me). Either way, milk is their main source of nutrition until 1yo, so dropping to 2 feeds at 9mo doesn't seem right to me :-\

Looking back at your posts, I see you are breastfeeding.  I am going to pop this over to the BF forum.

Oh, and this link might be helpful:

I agree.  I kept "milk" as the main source of nutrition until the 1st birthday.  That's a good marker.  So, until then our routines looked much like yours.  At wake time, they had "milk" and then one hour later solids.  I increased the amount of solids as I approached the first birthday, but kept solids after milk  Once we reached year one, I switch to mainly solids with cow's milk (in a sippy) after the meal and made snacks solids rather than milk.  Does this make sense?  Something like this:

6:30 Milk
7:70 solids bfast
10:30 Milk
11:30 solids lunch
2:30 Milk snack
5:30 Milk snack
6:00 solid dinner

My two girls did this routine well.  Also, you can definitely get rid of that NW!  :)

Just to support PPS  :). My HV told me to stope BFg when DS started solids - he didn't need my milk anymore apparently. Luckily, I checked with a number of sources and discovered that was not so. So I didn't stop.

At 9 months I think I was probably on 5 feeds - waking, mid morning, mid afternoon, bedtime and DF. I dropped the DF at 9 / 10 months. I stuck to 4 feeds per day until around a year I think; the feeds dropped when the need wasn't there or it made the day silly. So the midmorning feed went when it got messy with the am nap and lunch. The pm feed went when it started affecting DS eating supper - he wasn't hungry for supper so I dropped the feed.
