HTTJ - I am getting discouraged!!!
« on: December 29, 2009, 21:21:40 pm »
I have been working on lengthening my 6 mo naps for at least two weeks. She will most of the time fall asleep really easily in her crib (sometimes after doing a little pu/pd). She seems fast asleep for the first 20 mins and if I succeed (once every 2-3 days) after holding her down for an hour, I can get her to take 1.5 to 2 hour nap. But I have to hold her that long and most of the time it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? Sometimes her jolts are small and sometimes she goes from dead asleep to wide awake and wiggling instantly. the last two days have been the worst in that she hasn't had more than 30 mins of sleep at a time. She usually has 2h15m to 2h30m A time and then (if I am lucky) 40 min nap time. When I can get her to sleep longer than 40-45 min, she is definitely in a better mood, but I'm not because I have sat in a dark room for an hour trying to keep her asleep. Sorry for the ranting.... any advice would be great! Is there anything that I am missing?

sorry for not replying sooner.... family, holidays, etc....

I think that I am just getting tired of doing httj and I want her to majically sleep for a two hour nap on her own. I am going to try to get out of fantasy land and realize that this is my job and it is going to take some work. We did have a sucessful 2 hour nap this morning and she woke refreshed, but the other two naps of the day were very short resulting in refusal to go to bed for the night.

Went to the pedi too and she has grown two inches in two months!! maybe we are dealing with some growth spurt issues too....

here was today's EASY

6.45 woke
7.00 eat / bf
9.15 sleep
11.15 woke up
11.30 eat /bf
12.00 solids
2.00 nap
2.45 woke up
3.00 eat / bf
5.00 eat /bf (just a little)
5.20-5.50 catnap
6.00 solids
7.00 bath
7.20 refused to go to sleep!!!!
8.15 finally asleep

I realize that the catnap was too late and that is what made her not sleepy at her usual bedtime. But I couldn't get her to nap longer at 2pm and by 5pm she was starting to be a mess and cranky. so i let her have a catnap which of course resulted in a late bedtime and will result in tiredness tommorrow - ugh!
thanks for your input and I appreciate your thoughts!

just wondering why the 2nd A time is 2 hours 45mins?? could you try and put her down at 2.5 hours instead? it could be that shes OT and not able to push through the sleep cycle. usually a 45min nap means UT but in some cases it does mean OT instead. If you get a decent 2 hour nap from a 2.5 hour A time then can you replicate that again for the next A time?

That is a good point and I don't know if there was more pu/pd than usual or if i remembered the time wrong .... but it really doesn't seem to matter because sometimes she is so tired at the 2 hr mark that i put her down then.... it really varies alot from day to day. It also depends on how long i stay in there with her. If I hold her from 25 min - 60 min she will usually last for another 30-60 min. but if there is a disturbance (truck going by, dog bark, etc.) at just the wrong time, she will wake up.
I guess it maybe alot of work and I am just feeling really tied down and seeing very little progress some days. our routine could be better I guess... i have just been looking at her cues more than the clock and maybe I am not catching the earlier ones. It just seems like a long process with no end in sight!!!!
