10 mos old is consistently biting - is there anything i can do?
« on: December 29, 2009, 00:07:24 am »
Hi,
I'm feeling rather discouraged.  My DS is consistently biting me when BFing.  He only has 2 bottom teeth which came in a few weeks ago. I was hoping the biting would pass once the novelty wore off but it hasn't stopped.  I've been grinning and bearing it and trying to get through it but it is getting so painful now that I don't really enjoy it anymore.  I've been bleeding on both sides and the wounds never heal b/c I'm BF him 4x a day and then he bites again and it starts all over.

I was trying to BF until 1 year but I'm having thoughts of weaning early now.  I try and take him off when he bites and wait a while before offering again.  Usually, it does happen towards the end of a feed so if that is the case then I won't offer that side again and just either stop or offer him the other side.  I try my best not to react when he bites (aside from saying firmly "no biting") so it doesn't seem like a game. But I have had a few times when I was in tears from the pain :'(

Does anyone have any advice or ideas on how to help stop him biting me?  I'd like to continue BF but not like this...

My lo has gone through phases of doing this- it really can take the pleasure out of feeding! I found this link helpful - http://www.kellymom.com/bf/older-baby/biting.html

I found pulling him towards me helped - he then can't breathe so has to release! Also watching carefully towards the end of a feed with my little finger ready to unlatch him if he looked like biting. I generally find he only catches me by accident now... One day I did react with a sudden intake of breath & 'ouch no biting it hurts mummy', but then he refused to feed all day and took a lot of persuading to latch back on - lots of tears.. Since then he hasn't done it deliberately.

Hi Jen, Thanks for the link - there was some great information.  Today was really bad as he was biting me at the end of each feed.  I;'m going to try some of the ideas on the Kelly website for healing but haven't had much luck with any of the suggestions on how to make him to stop doing the actual biting.  It has been several weeks now and not sure how much more I can take  :(

Might be worth having a read through Anna's advice on this thread? http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=161485.0
