15 week old baby - waking through night - tried PU/PD
« on: January 13, 2010, 22:22:19 pm »
I have an almost 15 week old baby boy who is waking up a few times during the night, but not for a feed.  He has always woken up a few times through the night but self settled. His routine is pretty good for his age, he dropped the dream feed and slept through from 7pm to 6.30/7am for 2 nights running (we thought we'd cracked it!).  He has now started waking at 2/3 times during the night, and just giving him a dummy puts him straight back to sleep, but I dont want this to become a habit, it is the easiest option for me but not the answer in the long run.  He is on a four hourly routine and drinks 150 - 180oz, weighs 14lb 4 (last week).  After reading some posts it may be his daytime napping thats the problem but he seems quite happy with it in general. Below is our routine, any advice would be appreciated.  (I have tried the shh/pat with him lying in his cot but its like he's ignoring me and it doesnt make any difference - dummy works everytime).  Sorry for this being so long winded, but trying to fit everything in.
7-7.15am    Eat
7.30           Activity
8.20/30       Sleep for half hour
9am           Activity
10.15/30     Sleep for half hour
11am          Eat
11.20          Activity
12/12.30      Sleep for half hour (occasionally sleep for 11/2 hours)
1/1.30pm     Activity
2/2.30pm     Sleep
3pm            Eat
4.30/5pm    Sleep for half hour
5/5.30pm    Activity - Nappy off time
6.30pm       Bath - Ready for Bed
7pm           Eat - in Bedroom put down awake
Last night went like this, bed at 7pm, woke up at 12am, I tried the PU/PD method but he just seemed to get more & more upset so I gave in and gave him the dummy, went back to sleep straight away, woke again about 4.30, gave dummy and again about 5.30am.

Sweetie I'm sorry but it sounds to me like the dummy is already a habit.
Also PU/PD will not work if a prop like the dummy is present, so the first thing you need to do is decide to keep it and deal with the dependency and replugs, or to ditch it.

The short naps surely aren't doing you any good either; have you tried to extend them?

Hi, thanks for your reply.  Did you mean I would need to ditch the dummy before I do the PU/PD, if so how would I do that?  Also I read somewhere that 4 months was the best stage to get rid of a dummy so was wondering whether I should hold off another month or will that make it harder?  He does go down at night without his dummy but I tried putting him down for his daytime nap without it today and he cried for 10mins before I gave in and gave him the dummy (but I have been taking it out when he's asleep).

Also Ive tried extending his naps but most times he'll wake up after the half hour and just lie awake for another half hour, occasionally he has slept longer but of his own accord.

Sorry for all these questions, Im new to this (and motherhood)!

Yes, if you want to do  PU/PD you'll have to ditch it.

There is info on the Props board for weaning, and of course you can post there on that specifically. The earlier you do it the better - the easier it will be. The dummy commonly becomes a full-blown prop around 12 weeks so I don't think you'd have anything to gain by waiting. That's great though that he goes down without it at night! That means he does know how to fall asleep without it.
