6 month old wakes every 1.5 hours all through night
« on: January 15, 2010, 13:41:13 pm »
Hi everyone
Hope you can advise - have been doing PUPD for last 2 weeks - and mostly successful - it has enabled me to get my baby to happily take her daytime naps in her moses basket (previously she would only sleep on me!) and the EASY routine has helped me break the breastfeed to sleep assocaition too.

However, my LO has always woken every 1-2 hours through the night - when she was younger I used to attribute this to hunger and would automatically breast feed her at every waking - however I have now noticed that in fact, most times she is not actually hungry any more - as can be PUPD back to sleep. But it is getting increasingly frustrating that I still have to do this every 1-2 hours every night!

I think she just needs to learn how to settle herself - any ideas how I can help her to do this?

A little background info :
She has been breastfed from birth
Just started weaning - which she is taking to very well
Has shown signs of teething since 4 months - but no teeth yet
Before starting the PUPD method she was co-sleeping (the continual feeding in the night meant this was the only way I'd ever get any sleep!)
She has 3 naps during day, each approx 1 hour each
Bedtime routine of bath, massage, final feed, PJs starts around 7pm, and gets to bed about 8pm

Hope you can help me to get her to stay asleep longer/ settle herself when she wakes! She did do 3 hours one night - but that must have just been a miracle coz back to 1-2 hours since!!

If you need any more info, just let me know
I look forward to hearing from you all - I am due to go back to work in a couple of months- and really want to get her sleeping through before than or I'll be like a zombie!!

Do you think she now needs the pupd to go back to sleep?  What about now doing something like not picking her up but having your hand on her back and try to get her to settle without the picking up?
The only other thing I thought was some sort of discomfort as it is that frequently.

Thanks Jane
Typical EASY day:
E 8.00am
A 8.30-9.30
S 9.30-11 (includes time getting her to sleep)
A 11-11.30
E 11.30
A 12-1.00
S 1.00-2.30 (ditto)
A 2.30-3
E 3.00
A 3.30-4.30
S 4.30-6 (ditto)
E 6.00
A 6.30 -7.30 (includes bath)
S BED
Then awake approx every 1-2 hours.......!

You'll notice she's on a 3.5 hour feeding schedule (she used to be on 3 hours I tried 4 but it was too long, so now we compromise at 3.5!)

No she hasn;t really taken to any kind of lovie as yet, nor a dummy
I do occasionally give her some calpol if her teeth are really playing up, if the teething gel hasn't helped

Looks like I might ned to change her daytime sleeping hours - but do I not run the risk of her getting overtired with only 2 naps if she won't sleep 1.5-2 hrs at each nap?

Looking forward to hearing from you
Claire :-)

Hi Jane
I can see your point re possible UT (assume this means under-tired? - I'm new to this and haven't picked up the meanings of all the abbrviations yet!) - however after 1.5 hours she starts yawning - so I'm not sure how I would increase her A time without ending up with a very grouchy baby who is difficult to get to sleep - please advise.

At night wakings I do PUPD - but its getting very tiring - a sI can be doing it for 45-60 mins befroe she gives in. Sometimes I give up and take her back to bed with me - where she sleeps like a log!!

yes, all her day naps are now in her moses basket in her bedroom without me

wrt DF (dream feed?) she will normally be awake around 11/12 anyway, so I don't wake her as such to feed, but I do give her a feed. Then she'll usually want one more feed during the night (usually around the 3am time). The rest of the time when she wakes she is not hungry - just needs help to get back to sleep.

Incidently, she actually settled herself to sleep this evening after her bath for the first time ever!! Took 15 mins but she did it herself - no PUPDs necessary _ I'm amazed and thrilled! She woke after an hour, but took just one PUPD and went straight back off. She's been asleep ever since (2 hours so far)......keeping my fingers crossed! Interestingly, she's actuually had 2 x 1.5 hour sleeps plus 1xcatnap of 40 mins today (she usually has been having 3 x 1 hour naps plus catnap) - so I'm hoping that this fact may actually have had some positive influence over her sleep. We'll see what happens the rest of the night!
