The day length depends on each child.

I know on here everybody says a 12 hour day, however, I've looked through just about every sample in Tracy's books and her suggested routines are almost ALWAYS 12.5 hour days. 7-7:30.

Lyle does really well with a 13 hour day. It's only been very recently that he is even willing to go down before a 13 hour day. I'm not sure what the change as been. I think just that he is so used to his bedtime. We've been getting occasional later wakings here. YEY. But, he doesn't seem to want to stretch his day out. Which is fine.

I'm happy to hear that the sleep training is going well. :)  Remember what I told you, at this age 20 min is very very normal. Even 30 mins sometimes. Although, like you if it takes 30 min or more here that USUALLY - not always, shows that we might have some NW issues, or more likely - EW issues here.

If she is doing well at night and you aren't getting EW, then I wouldn't stress so much that it is taking her about 15-20 min to go to sleep, especially if she is doing it on her own.

Things seem to have settled out a bit. :) YEY!!

At this age I would be very reluctant to cut the nap. I really would. 2 hours is a nice solid length. And you just got things settled out. In a couple months (probably about 3 or so, I would look at maybe cutting it, when things need a change)

I think it is time to relax and breathe a little. So exciting, isn't it? She is now getting at the age where they handle OT so so so much better.

Oh, regarding the nap time. Tracy's recommended nap time is 1-3 and so many moms have a great success with these times around this age. We are still not there yet, believe it or not, even if Lyle wakes at close to 7. He will want to go down earlier. Like today, he woke at 6:45  :o The very latest he will go is 12:15. He will probably want to go in even earlier. He just prefers his nap early.

A good number of my friends who have LOs Lyle's age, so older than your DD, are doing
Wake 7
Nap 1-3
In bed 7:30
To be asleep by 8:00

I think a lot of them having been doing this since around 18 months.

They have been doing really well on this for quite some time. So that might be something that you guys settle into in a little bit of time. It becomes a choice. Do you want a 12 hour night, or a longer nap. They choose to have the longer nap. A lot of us have found that cutting the nap doesn't always guarantee a longer night, and sometimes leads to OT. It was working for us, and it's not anymore.

I'm so happy for you.  :-*

I'm definitely finding that there is something so right about a 12.5 hour day.  That nasty bedtime we had the other day, when I look at the entire day, I was putting him to bed only 12 hours after wake up . . I know an extra half hour would have saved all the crying.

The other thing I've noticed too, is that if he sleeps longer than 2 hours during the day, it cuts into his night . . so I'm definitely at the point of figuring out whether I want a longer night or longer nap!

Thanks for that great info Sherry! :)

Yes I think there is something to the 12.5 or 13 hr day. I've noticed that pattern the past few days too.

Today was good. I woke her up from the nap after 2hr though. That is Ok isn't it? I was also just not intersted in going down the path of cutting that nap even further so I"m glad you also agreed Sherry :)

Last night we only had 1 NW!! yay yay yay! And that was close to 3:30AM, asking for some water. She slept from 7:40 up until 3:30 then had some water which I gave her then she took about 10 mins to get back to sleep and I woke up for my alarm clock at 7 AM :) :) then went and woke her up, although I think she was stirring anyway.

so our routine today was:

wake - 7AM
nap - 12:20
bedtime - between 7:20 - 7:40.

Funnily she sleeps so much faster for her nap than at bedtime. But I have good news on the sleep training, Sherry, which I have put in my other post with the sleep training questions I had.

Lyle also falls asleep much faster for his nap. 90% of the time.
off to read your other post.

What a great night. Since it is so hot over there right now, I think that is completely legitimate for her to want water. Have you thought about putting a sippy in her cot?

We had a really good night, as you will read in my other post. she STTN!!! I'm still saying it over and over to myself out of disbelief :)

Today was also a good day

Wake - 6:45 (after a 11hr night)
nap - 12:10 - 2:10
Bedtime - she seemed a bit tired so I took her in around 7:10 or so, she fussed a bit. I doubt she was OT. But didn't seem UT either. Our sleep training regressed a bit in that I had to give her a few cuddles then eventually she fell asleep.

After the 2hr nap how much A time do you think she can handle? I was trying to stick to a 12.5hr day but I guess if she's having a 11 hr night then it should really be a 13hr day isn't it? Because with all her fussing at bedtime she does usually fall asleep just between 7:30 and 7:45. So should I just take her in then rather than at 7:15?

Oops forgot to answer your question about the sippy cup. I haven't really done that because I don't think she will be able to find it at night and I suspect she might just kick it about in her sleep. DD moves around SO much in her sleep she's in all sort of funny positions. Half that time that's why she wakes up because bunny is somewhere flung about in the cot and not near her!

Do you think it's worth a try though anyway?

I'm not sure to be honest. I never did it. Lyle sleeps on the floor now, and he too moves around SOOOOO much. For a few nights, awhile back I put a sippy on his book shelf. He liked that. But, I haven't had to do it since.

Because she STTN, I wouldn't worry about it right now.
I just know that some other Aussie ladies have had -water in the middle of the night issues-, so it's something we'll keep in the back of our minds.
I never put anything but Lyle's blankets in his crib, since he moved around so much. And there are no toys in his bedroom now, except stuffed animals which aren't hard if he rolls on :)

YEY, YEY, YEY. Still so happy for you :)

Did I tell you that I have an OB appointment today. Going to find out if bub is still in the breech position. Wish me luck, I'm really nervous, because they say if he is he is too big to flip. They said he was 5.5 pounds at 32 weeks. Yikes!!!
