4 month wakeful???
« on: January 29, 2010, 15:47:15 pm »
My baby is 3.5 months old, and used to sleep from 11 pm until at least 7 am (sometimes even 9-10am).

The last two nights she's woken up around 4 am, after going down at 12 midnight. She wasn't hungry, as all I did was return her paci, and she would fall asleep for 45 minutes. But then she'd cry/fuss a bit and again I'd return her paci, and asleep she goes again. - Rinse & repeat for the last 5 hours this morning.

Is this the 4 month wakeful that I've heard about?

What else could it be? Help!

 :-\

Do you think she's going through a growth spurt? Since she's waking up so soon again after you settle her, it sounds like she could be hungry. I would suggest you try feeding her if you settle her and she wakes up soon again.

Well, I figure since she falls back asleep after giving her paci, she's not hungry, right?

Could be, but if she's continually waking, she might be hungry. Why don't you try feeding her tonight and see what happens? If she takes a full feed, then you'll know she's hungry. If she doesn't, then you'll know to stick with the paci.

Hmmm, ok. I'll try that. Should I give her a full feed (like 5-6 oz) or just a few oz to get her through?

If she'll take the full feed, give her the full feed. At this age, it's really common for LOs to need to eat throughout the night. You've been lucky so far that she's been sleeping through! Mine never has :(

Alright, I'll try feeding her!

Last question: If she has been STTN, so I know she can STTN without a mid-night feeding, why is she suddenly back to waking again?

It could be a few things: growth spurt (common at 3 months), developmental change, teething, discomfort (hot, cold, wet)

These LOs like to keep us on our toes! What used to be won't always be, and what is won't always be either ;)  Here's hoping that your LO goes back to STTN soon!

My LO is 3.5 months old too and is doing the exact same thing. She doesn't take a paci so I knew it is not that. She woke up 1hour after I settled her so I fed her when she woke up again and then she slept to 7:45. It must be something developmental because mine was STTN as well. sigh--I guess it was nice while it lasted.
