How to teach 3 year old to at least stay in bed longer?
« on: February 05, 2010, 13:52:30 pm »
DS 1 is 3.  He wakes up at around 6 and knocks on the door of his room to come out.  This wakes up DS2 (1 year) and my day must begin.  I could get DS1 to stay in bed (maybe not alseep, but quiet) for a while longer so DS2 can sleep longer, but the damage is when he comes and knocks on the door.  Is there a way I could teach him that he's not allowed out of bed until I let him out so he doesn't knock on the door and wake DS2?

I have a clock that turns green when it's time to get up.  We've tought our three year old that he must stay in his room until his clock turns green.

Just out of curiosity because I am following along for a friend, how did you teach your 3 yo to actually stay there.  I understand that the clock signifies that it is time to get up.   But how did you get your 3 yo to stay and actually follow those directions?

We actually started using it when he was still in his crib.  When he was in his crib he was happy to stay in there until we got him in the morning.  We would never go in and get him until the clock was green.  Everytime we went in we'd say, your clocks green time to get up (his daycare provider taught him colours very early).  So once we transitioned him to his big boy bed he was used to the idea that it was time to get up when his clock turned green.  It works very well.  There has been the odd morning where he calls us in before it's green.  When that happens we just lie him back down and tell him it's not morning yet and that his clock is not green.  Those mornings are few and far between.  Usually he'll stay in his bed until the clock is green at which point I hear him saying 'my clocks green mommy'.
I've read lots of reviews of the product on-line and a lot of people have had success even starting later.  I think if I remember correctly the target age for the product is 3 years.  Can't say it will work for everyone but it has worked well for us.  In fact my son often puts his toys to sleep and then tells them their clock is green it's time to get up.  It's pretty cute.

That is really great.  I am glad you had so much success with it.  I will forward the info to my friend.

Hope it's ok that I jump in here. I really like this green clock idea! Where did you get it? I am in the US.

I'm in Canada so I bought it off a Canadian website.  I've seen in on Amazon.com though.  Also I just found a different one yesterday called 'my tot clock' that is the same idea and is from the US.

We put a night light in B's room and put it on a timer.  If the light is on he can get up ;)
