Tap Water?
« on: February 09, 2010, 10:25:33 am »
Hi there,

Just a quickie.  When can I stop offering cooled boiled water and offer good old tap water instead?

TIA,

Siobhan

I suppose it depends on how confident you are in your tap water  :) - but here I stopped at 6 months.

Sorry, forgot to add - Anyone offer herbal teas to their LO?  Met a girl last week who did, but I'm not sure about it?

TIA,

I read that you can stop at 6 months, I didn't realise this untill recently so stopped at about 8 months, had no effect on him at all, was kind of expecting a change to his nappy or something (was clearly being a bit silly!) but he was fine. And its so much easier!! :)

I've not give anything to Ben, apart from a tiny bit of apple juice in water if he gets constipation.  I think unless you are 100% sure what's in a tea then its best not to give it - imo it's not like they *need* to be drinking them, so why risk it?  But that's just my thoughts - I would be interested to hear why people do give them, perhaps I'm missing out  ;)!!

Thanks everyone - Can I use tap water to make up her bottles aswell or just as a drink on its own?  I think I'll keep the teas for myself at the moment - was curious tho.  I think she offered them instead of juice to add flavour to her LO's water but I'm not 100% sure.

Appreciate the replies!

Gave good old tap water from about 8 months. Until last week Maeve had never had anything to drink except water and milk. Had been offered juice out and about but didn't like it but this week at the library had some juice and seemed to like it. I'm thrilled she'll drink water so readily so continue just to offer it rather than having to flavour it with something. Was that the point of the herbal teas? For flavour? Or another reason?

I agree, I only give water, which he takes really well. I did try juice purely to see if he would take it from a sippy cup as he wont take water from it (a whole other issue!!) but he wouldn't take that either so didn't persue it! If they will drink water then it's really good for them so I don't see the point in giving anything else.

Not sure what the reason was for the herbal teas and I didn't want to ask just in case it was a 'no-brainer' that I didn't know about!!  Will happily keep giving tap-water fom now on and leave the teas till she's about 20!!

Thanks again,

Siobhan

Depending on what your tap water is like and where you live, it is recommended for the flouride to give instead of bottled water (once water is given).

Herbal teas are given in some countries the way juice is given here, for anything from a simple drink or to soothe tummy issues or illness. My mom always gave us tea instead of meds when we were sick (Camomille for colds, mint for tummy ache, and they always seemed to help) I don't give herbal tea to dd but I drink herbal tea myself instead of grabbing for pills of any sort.

Some are quite mixed about giving juice, in my case our ped and dentist said never to give juice to dd as the nutrition is next to zero and the natural sugars can cause cavities(fibre, vit C, etc., she can get from the real fruit instead) so dd only gets it when she goes to Bday parties, etc and she knows it's a treat though she doesn't care for it much. Most of my friends do give juice to their los. It's all a matter of parental preference really.

i agree about the juice. i always think about how many oranges are needed to make one glass of orange juice. in our case with our juicer it's about 3. so that's the sugars of 3 whole oranges in one glass of juice, without most of the fibre :-/  if you give it, better to dilute a lot!
