Help me stop these crib parties please!!
« on: February 16, 2010, 14:36:23 pm »
Hi!
In the past, DS(now 12.5months) has sometimes woken through the night and played in his crib...which I infamously called crib parties, lol!! Well, we arent laughing anymore, they are becoming more and more frequent and during the last 4 nights, he's been up "partying" 3 nights.
The first time I ever noticed him doing this was when he was 9 months and at the time, he'd had 4 hours day sleep, so I knew it was definitely a UT issue. He then did it again around the 11 month mark for a few nights here and there and at that time, it was definitely OT as we were starting the 2-1 transition and experimenting with the right routine (still looking for that by the way!!). Our 2-1 started going well when we did the long am/short pm combo, with the odd one nap day here and there...but I noticed that in the nights following that one day nap, we would get a "crib party" night. Although he's still young for just the one nap, he does well on those days...usually napping for 2.5 hrs and in a really good mood..I always do an early bedtime just to avoid OT and he appears ok with that...but then the NW shows up.
Lately, he had fighting the pm catnap really badly and so I switched to the short am/long pm and within a few days, we had a good thing going....30 min in the am, then 3 hours A (or even less) and a 1.5hr nap, then 3.5A to bedtime.  We are getting 11 hour nights and no NW before midnight, which I know is a sure sign of OT. The only difference is that when he was on the longam/short pm, his total day sleep was about 2.5h (same as on the one nap days) and with this new routine, he's getting about 2 hours day sleep....I can't get him to nap any earlier in the am and napping any later in the pm will mess up bedtime, so I don't know how to get more day sleep out of him, although he doesn't appear grizzly and is quite happy, which is saying alot for a former "grumpy, touchy" baby!!
Anyways, all this to say that these NW's are driving me crazy...they usually last about 2 hours and seem to occur most frequently between the hours of 3-5am. He almost never cries and just plays and plays...clapping his hands, laughing, etc. or he'll just do the 7 mile stare at the wall. I know i'm really lucky that he doesn't cry and that I don't need to go  in....I realize it could be way worst. Everyone tells me to just go back to sleep and let him be, but the BW in me tells me that these NW's are indicative of something being wrong with his routine/day sleep and so I just can't let it go.
I getting worried because these NW's are getting more and more frequent (yuck!) and i'm finally returning to work in 2 weeks (double yuck!!), so I'd like to figure this out before then. Thanks so much!!
Here's what our EASY looks like:
6:30-7am wake
11-11:30 nap 1
2:30-4pm nap 2
7:30pm bedtime

Hmmm...could it be that now that you are doing short AM nap, long PM nap he needs a longer A time before bed?  Will he go down any earlier in the AM?  And/or cut that first nap down to 20 mins to bring Nap 2 a bit earlier.  You could try:

Awake - 6:30/7:00
Nap 1 - 10:30ish (20 or 30 mins)
Nap 2 - 2:00 - 3:30
Bedtime - 7:30

Not sure as I don't think we've ever had this kind of awake but happy crib party.  My LO is either asleep or yelling, as far as I know!  Though I don't have a video monitor so who knows really...

he woke this am at 7:30am and we tried for an earlier am nap...he played a bit and finally went down at 11am, so I woke him at 11:30am and we're aiming for a 2:30 start for the pm nap.
I was also thinking of adding to his A time before bed, was just afraid I guess cause he seems tired. If he does a good long pm nap, then I'll try for 4 hours A time before bed and see what happens....thanks so much!

Lots of hugs! Have you tried adding A time before bed?  You can also try shortening his am nap to 20 min, and move his pm nap earlier.

Thank Sabrina! We inadvertently added LOTS of A time before bed today...lol!! Caleb just flat out refused his pm catnap and so his last A was from 12:45pm(waking of am nap) to 7pm bedtime....this after a super short 9 hour night last night!!! Ughhhh....i don't think he's EVER done such a short night...so it was a bad combo of short night/ short day sleep.
Praying for a solution to these crib parties though!!

Here's hoping that the extra long A time might have avoided a crib party last night?!

I remembered that babybarr had another thread that sounded somewhat similar (i.e. awake for hours in the middle of the night, not upset just awake).  Her LO has health problems, so may be more complicated than for your LO, but may be something on her thread that helps you if the jump in A times doesn't sort it?

Crib parties in the middle of the night were always UT for us.  I agree that maybe a longer A before bed is needed.

Maybe he is ready for the odd 1 nap day here and there?  It looks like he is easily getting 4.5 or 5 hours before his first nap.  If you could push him bit by bit and do an early lunch he might get to 12:00ish and then take one longer nap?

His A times seem to be getting too long for two naps, but he may not be quite ready to do fully 1 nap.   Just a tricky part of the transition I guess!

Think the only options are to make sure that one of the naps is very short (20-30 mins) or do a 1 nap day with an earlier bedtime.

I too would try the odd one nap. Try pushing out his first A to 12ish.

Ladies, thanks so much for your replies....I was starting to feel hopeless!! So our super long A time did in fact produce a looooong party free night....DS woke this am at 7:30, so 12.5hr night!! And as far as I know, he didn't throw himself a party.
On days like today where he wakes later, i'll try the one nap...he's done the odd day here and there where i've given him lunch early and he does really well...usually sleeping from 12ish to 2:30-45pm...but we've also had crib parties on those subsequent nights so i wasn't sure if it was because he wasn't ready for the one nap. It's all so tricky this 2-1 and because i think we're closer to the 1 nap than 2, it's probably going to be rough like this until we're safely on the one nap.
