7 mo old Spirited DS not having as much milk as he should..
« on: February 22, 2010, 10:52:57 am »
Hi there

My DS started on EASY two weeks ago and its been working really well.  We also started PU/PD last week and we've seen some great results.  He's gone from waking anything up to 6 times a night to just once or twice.  He only wakes to feed and I'm thinking its because he's not getting enough milk during the day to sustain him at night.

He has 3 squares a day and a total of about 400mls of milk throughout the day and night.

My question is, how do I get him drinking more milk during the day so it will sustain him for longer at night?

We've done dream feeding but the book says to start cutting it out at around 6-8 months.  Should i try cluster feeding?

thanks in advance!

Can you post what you routine looks like with the solids and milk?

At this age, your lo should be having at least 20 oz of milk per day which is around 600 ml's.

What size teat are you using?

Hi there

here is our EASY:

7am - wake up and breastfeed
8:15 - breakfast (yogurt/fruit)
9:15 - take upstairs for wind down, then 210ml bottle (but will typically only have around 150mls)
9:30 - nap time
11:00/11:30 - wake up
12pm - lunch then play
2:00/2:30 - 210ml bottle, then nap time
4:00 -wake up and breastfeed
5:00 - dinner
6:30 - bath time
7:00 - begin bedtime routine, then 210ml bottle
7:30 - bed

he is only waking up once or twice each night and will have the full bottle.  He's got the 6m+ teats

From the routine you have posted he's getting about 570 mls + 1 breastfeed - yes? How many night bottles is he having - is it just 1 of 210mls again? If I have read your routine right he is getting above the recommended minimum for his age. The min advised is 20oz - 600ml with solids and this includes dairy in foods. So as long as he is having the appropriate number of wet and dirty nappies and gaining weight he is getting enough I'd say.

I would say he is not taking much at 9.15 because he is too full still from his morning breastfeed and breakfast - he does well to take 5oz! When he has a bottle just before a nap is he feeding to sleep or are you putting him down awake? How many nightfeeds is he having? If it is more then one I think you will need to work on eliminating 1 as at his age he really doesn't need more than 1 (not all babies have dropped night feeds at this age, my DD only dropped hers 3 weeks ago) and it will be taking away from his daytime intake.
