Baby gate - am I doing it right?
« on: February 07, 2010, 21:02:18 pm »
Hi there, I found some really helpful on a thread the other day about using a baby gate to help start my DS on his way to independent sleep ( 21 months in a bbb). But I cant find exactly where it is now!!! ::)
We dediced that tonight would be our first night. I put up the gate, popped him into bed with Bobby, his teddy, sat with him for a minute and sang a lulaby, and said nite nite.
I sat outside the gate. For the first 15-20 mins DS dragged a blanket over to the gate and lay on it, moaning, not really crying. I asked him several times to go and lie in his bed with Bobby, he eventually did, and only got out of bed once when he heard our dog bark. He stayed in his bed, calling " Mommy" every so often, I guess to check I was still there. All in all it took about an hour. I am really happy as it was our first night with the gate and I didnt know what to expect.
Now, what should I do re NW. Do I simply follow the same routine morrow night, do I continue to sit outside the gate for the coming days/weeks or what should I be aiming for.
We have previously been held captive, not being able to leave his side until he was in a deep sleep.
Thanks in advance
xx

You can sit outside the gate, or be where he can hear but can't see you. My LO fights sleep more if he can see me, because he knows that once he goes to sleep I will go away. So for NWs when he is at the gate I check him once (that he isn't sick, poopy, hasn't lost his lovey) then put him back in bed and then I go back to bed. When he is crying at the gate I stay in bed (our bedrooms are right next to each other) and call out to him every few mins that it is time to sleep now, he needs to get into his bed and put his blanket on.

Ok great, he woke once last night, DH went to him, popped him back into bed and left the room, he did this three more times and the final time called out from our room to go and lie down with Bobby and he did, and I woke him at 7.10! So hopefully round 2 will be as good tonight!

Just an update...........god bless the gate!!!!!!
DS has gone to bed without fuss for the last month, it has been wonderful. we do our little bed time routine, read our nursery rhymes and often he will close the book and say all done and hand it to me and lie down with bobby. He knows the drill and its wonderful!!!
Thanks for your wonderful idea and advice
