With the crying I try to think of it along the lines of teaching any skills.  Over the last few weeks we have had a LOT of crying over having to share toys and letting other LOs have a turn.  But I'm not going to just let my DD snatch and keep everything to herself just so she won't cry.  Unfortunately for toddlers crying is their way of saying 'hey thats not fair, i'm not so fussed on that rule'.

And teaching a toddler to sleep is very different to teaching a new born.  there is a lot more understanding there and some crying is inevitable while there is a battle of wills going on!

Totally. Even Pantley's No Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers concedes that there's going to be crying when you're trying to persuade toddlers about a different way of doing things.

Hi Charli,
Sounds like you're making some progress so good for you!
I spoke to the nurse last time I had to take DD to have a jab and she told me to (try to!) ignore the really hysterical crying and if DD throws any kind of tantrums (to be in the room with her but not react to it) and then when she's calmer, then try to settle her.
I think I have been doing this - not too sure sometimes when it's the middle of the night! - and it seems to be working. NWs have been shorter than usual which is great but now I need to work on cutting them out!!!

That makes me feel a lot better about the CIO thing, thanks. I guess I always feel guilty when she cries, even when I know I haven't done anything wrong as such.
Laura I might try the neurofen tonight and see how she goes...It's such a catch 22-to medicate or not to medicate!

I started on NCSS for Toddlers, some very intersting points like how even the slighest bit of light can trigger a little one's mind into thinking it is morning time. I was keeping her nightlight on purely so that I could see if she was actually asleep because she used to lie stock still for a long time before actually going to sleep, but since she gave up the dummy she fidgets like mad, it's like she has itching powder in her PJs, until the last second when she falls asleep, so I don't need to watch her so closely, so I am going to bite the bullet tonight and turn the nightlight off and dim the bathroom light which I have always left on for her...
Thanks again all  :-*

Ps Hi Irene just saw your post, sounds like you are making progress too well done, one day we will both have STTN'ers!! x
