2 clarifications pls
« on: February 27, 2010, 14:02:04 pm »
Hi, I'm just starting solids n today was the first day.
I gave lo baby rice n it went well.my questions are:
1-i know that solids shud come after bottle as the first A after E, but won't lo be full n more difficult to feed.
Lots of drs here recommend solids first and then bottle.
2-how much? She seems to enjoy n open her mouth willingly even after the recommended 2tsps...
I don't wana end up having to change her at nite from poo bc I know that if we give them as much as they want they end up with multiple poos a day. So I guess what the max I can give?

Thank u

1.  The reason you give milk first is that it is the most important source of nutrients up until a baby is one.  If you were to give solids first, then the baby would fill up on them and not take the milk therefore not getting the calories/nutrients needed to grow.  At these early stages solids are for experimenting and taste and getting used to textures but babies don't really get a lot of calories from them.  Make sense?  I used to do solids about 1/1.5 hours after milk and she always ate great.

2.  I was always unsure about amount as it seemed my LO would eat and eat and never stop!  I would start with 2 tsps for a few days and then increase if she is keen to eat more.  This will give you a chance to make sure its agreeing with her and not making her constipated.  I did apple and pear puree very early on and used to give it at breakfast and I was guaranteed she would poo about lunch time so night time was never an issue.

HTH!

Great questions kikoz15 I'm wondering the same thing. But can i add questions to this thread?

I'm wondering how much solid is too much coz I give BM before Soild too but i don't think he's getting enough BM. He is eating 3-4 tbsp of rice cereal and vaggi right now and is 7 month. I feel like my BM is decreasing really fast. Is that normal? Is he eating too much solids? When I feed him solid I noticed he seems to slow down towards the end but is willing to open up for more. Should i keep feeding him even though he seems to slow down? I'm really worried that his not getting enough BM for nutrients.

Thanks!

How many times a day are you you feeding him?  Just the two?  When he starts to slow down I'd offer a few more spoonfuls and if he's still slowing down then just stop there.

Does he seem satisfied after his milk feed or still hungry?   How long are you leaving between you milk feed and offering solids?

I'm feeding him 3 times a day. I try to feed him 1 to 1.5 hr after breastfeeding. I sometimes think while i'm Breastfeeding he's not getting enough but he doesn't empty. Might be that he's distracted though.

1.5 hours after bfing might just be too close to the next bf which would cause him not to take in as much milk. Try to shorten the time between the bf and solid, he should then eat less solids and more bf at the next feed. I currently do 30 minutes from the end of the bf though we just started solids almost 2 weeks ago, I will probably work that up to an hour as long as he's still taking in good bfs.
