How much is too much...
« on: February 27, 2010, 01:26:40 am »
Okay so I changed Ds2's (5 months) formula because he really wasn't drinking much of the other one and was getting fussier and fussier on the bottles. Not upset or in pain or anything, he just didn't want to drink it. The new formula has been a hit, he downs every bottle and cries when it finishes because he wants more. The problem is he's gone from poohing 1-2 times a day to 5-7 times a day ( a lot of the time at night, its sooo annoying to wake him up to change a nappy.)

Now at first I thought the extra poohing was just his little system getting used to the change in formula, (this is his 4th day on it) I'm not sure how long it would take his system to settle. It also could be because he's consuming about twice the amount of liquid that he was. I'm willing to give it another week or so but I'm wondering if it doesn't settle should I be worried about it. Is he poohing to much?? The poos aren't runny and they seem a normal colour and consistency, they may be a touch acidic because he's had a bit of a nappy rash but that's the only problem with it.

I don't think it could be an allergy because they are both milk based formula's but I don't think poohing so much is normal is it??

Hi!  It is actually normal for a change in formula to result in a change in pooping habits - as long as they are normal in colour and consistency and don't seem to bother him I don't think it should be too much a cause for concern (though I agree that those night time poops are the WORST ::))  If he's consuming a lot more then it makes sense that he's pooping more - what goes in must come out! ;)

Have you read http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=157413.0 ?  One of the first subheadings is "how often should my baby be pooping?" so you should find some more information there.

HTH! :)

my dd1 did poo this much (not at night thankfully) but basically after every feed.  the upside? i had her trained for poop on the potty by 13 mo because she was so consistent with it (and so many times a day to practice!)
