Day care nap dilemma
« on: March 23, 2010, 01:36:17 am »
I stayed home with my DS until he was 14 weeks old (he is now 15 weeks old). He went through a short nap phase but using WTS and such, I was able to get him napping nicely in his crib. Then I went back to work 4 days a week. Three of those days he is in day care and one day my DH is home. Now, he is back to taking the dreaded 40 minute nap and he has a hard time settling in his crib again. I feel like all the hard work I did in my last few weeks of maternity leave has been undone.

The day care is lovely and they have approximately one caretaker for every three babies. They are willing to do a lot to help him sleep, but there is only so much they can do. I can't ask them to hover over his crib shush-patting and WTS-ing. Also he is not on their schedule yet. He is still on a 3-hour EASY - I know I need to start moving towards a 4-hour but I feel he is not ready yet - and they nap from 10-12 and from 2-4. He cannot handle that yet. I look at his activity sheets they fill out for him, and they feed him every three hours, but he is only napping for under an hour each nap. They told me he won't nap in his crib there either. (Not surprising, he is a motion junkie!) He's been napping in his stroller or in a bouncy seat there.

So now he is a bad napper at day care and comes home exhausted, and a bad napper at home. He is waking up after each nap at about the 40-minute mark and he is absolutely hysterical. He mostly will not go back to sleep.

Has anyone been through this? Is there anything that can be done to fix this situation or do I just have to ride it out until he is on their schedule and hope that he magically turns into a good napper again???

Thanks.

HI there, hugs, I just started my DS in daycare too, except he's 12 mths and only on 1 nap.  Yesterday he only napped 1 hour there, he's a bad napper by trade hehe.

I don't have a huge amount of advice but just that I am told it does get better and they do just adjust to the daycare schedule - it really is like something magical happens and they all just fall in line.  It may be on the days that you have him you have to clean up some of the OT with longer naps or earlier bedtimes.
The tweaking never stops!
